Adding a Info Center

Out of curiosity has anyone ever added a newer style DIC from say a Grand Prix into there cars. Im assuming they run off inputs from the PCM but not for certain.

Was thinking of a unit like this one

Re: Adding a Info Center

Im Brainstorming a similar idea of putting an Overhead console with temperature and compass in it. but I can't find one to experiment with! think one out of a 94 bravada would be a great starting point.

Re: Adding a Info Center

There is a write up on here somewhere about adding the Rearview Mirror with those functions built in. Temp sensor has to be mounted somewhere in the fender. I have the post bookmarked but not on this PC. I was looking to add one that gives you things like current gas mileage/Range and those assorted type of things

Re: Adding a Info Center

As far as the Bravada, S-Blazer, & S-Jimmy overhead console from a '94, I've been looking at this idea this for my 'Bird. I wouldn't use that early version. A major issue with the older style is that they have elastic straps that stretch out with age and look terrible after a few years. I own a '03 Blazer...there's two types of overhead conlsoles in the '98 to '04 S10s family, (which includes the Astro/ Safari Van). They are similar to the older style units but are much nicer overall. One is the full length type, the other is a shorter version used in sunroof equipped vehicles. This new version hasn't got a lot of things on it but it tells the temp, compass, and if ice is likely, they also hold your garage opener, sunglasses, and have a compartment that serves me as a great place to stash my wallet. Another issue is that the consoles have a slight notch on the headliner side to fit it over the roof support brace. It can be remedied if your careful and snip the material fill the gap with cardboard and reglue it
'

I have pulled apart two now. One from a Safari Van and one from a Bravada. There is a lot of wiring to remove, with the van having a lot more and an odd routing. If you've got time and patience it'll take a while or get creative with a BFH and some pliers and you'll be done in about 15-20 minutes. I also yanked the basic harness from a wrecked Camaro with the overhead for connectors and reference. I have yet to actually put it in...I gotta buy a new headliner and am too lazy to tear apart my car right now.
