i have a 1986 Camaro Iroc-Z-28 and my dome lights dont work. my radio turns on but no sound?(not even static) my main problem is the damn dome light and interior lights none work (trunk, dome light, courtesy lights) my headlights work, gauge lights work. i have tried replacing hte fuse and it clips the fuse and shocked me as i was putting it in ? any ideas?

any sugggestions ? my main problem is the fuse is getting clipped all the time. i put a larger fuse too see if it would blow within a second it blew as i was putting it on

 

That sucks. Sorry I don't have an answer. I'm not sure what it could be. Maybe a stripped wire somewhere shorting out? I'm pretty sure the connection has to be grounded and then the interior lights will come on. My domelight also turned off recently and wont come on. The courtesy lights will, and if I manually push the button on the upper console they light up, but not when I open the door. I'll probably investigate tomorrow and see if I can help...

 

Sounds like you have a power wire touching ground somewhere. Check all the assessories coming off that circuit starting with anything that was recently moved, touched, or modified.

Example - maybe you recently put a new visor on and the screw cought the dome light wire when it was mounted.

I'm willing to bet that's just a bad ground at the door switch. The dome will probably work after you use an 11mm socket to lossen and then re-tighten the door switches. Your switch will not supply the required "switched ground" - but the button is.

 

Door pins & cigarette lighterare the same fuse. Check to see if the lighter (usually the culprit) is causing the problem. Disconnect lighter then put fuse back in. If it does not blow you have your problem. also do a search as this problem comes up a lot on this board.

 

ok thanks guys ima take a look at the cig. lighter and the door switches and check the grounds. it was jus purchased and the guy did a wack *** wireing. soo much wiring i cant express. like were the maf relay is theres like 5 relays 2 plugged in and 2 not plugged in but no available plugs it weird. and theres wires coming directly off the batt.terminal? weird. thanks guys

hey guys thanks for the tip turns out that bloody cig. lighter went out so i jus disconnected it and left the harnes hanging and put the lighter back for looks mad props!

 

I have the same problem. Althought mine might be a tad worse. My interoir lights don't turn on except for when i turn the headlights on and then it's only the gauges that work. Plus my power locks don't work! luckly my power windows work, but my rear tuck release doesn't work. I have no idea what to do. The guy i ought it from looks like he had a crappy mechanic install a heate core and i don't know if they ripped wires apart? Theres a white wire running from fuse box to radio pod and when i put a fuse in it blows up instantly. This guy had a custom radio in but then pulled it out and screwed up everything, boke radio pod. Basically the guy that owned this car was a complete dumb a**. Also the radio constant is messed up so the radio settings aren't saved. If anyone has any ideas as to what i can do please let me know!!! The wiring on this car is frustrating.

 

moppymcjones-have you treid the cig. lighter? that fuse that was clipping was controlling: power door locks, power antenna, horn, dome light, floor light, read lights. did u buy a chiltons manuel? or Haynes? from a local auto part store they have good wiring diagrams. yes i know what u mean this f-ing iroc-z's wiring is a pain in my @$$ like idk wiring is insane. crappy

 

WoW, it was controlling all of that? That is exactly everything that does not work! thank you so much i'll go try it right now! Tomorrow actually, gotta sleep. I have a huge red firebird manual from 86 with many wiring diagrams but i don't know how to read them i'll have to get my friends to look at it.

 

if its a chiltons manuel thats wat my bird ooks like :P
