New member, got some wiring ?'s

Hello everybody, I just picked up an 87 Firebird with a 355 motor and a holley 650 (according to the seller it used to be a 305 TBI and was swapped when the old motor gave up the ghost), and a newly rebuilt 700R4 trans. The car drives great, but I have a few wiring conundrums I'm curious about. I've always been a Honda guy, (my other car is a 2007 Honda Fit... yeah I know.), so this carbed motor and mechanical transmission are totally alien to me.

First, my turn signals don't work. I have replaced all 4 bulbs, and they all light up, but they won't flash. I assume this means my signal flashing unit is dead, but where is this located? I'm assuming it's located under the dash near the fusebox, but I can't seem to find it.

Also, my tach and speedo don't work. According to the previous owner, they just need to be hooked up, as they were disconnected when the motor and trans were swapped and never reconnected. Where does the tach wire connect to, and furthermore where/what color is this wire?

From what I have learned, the speedo is more of a mechanical system. How would this hook up to my 700R4? What kind of adjustments would I need to make?

The previous owner told me that the rear diff was a positraction unit, but I've found I've got a "one tire fire" thing going on, so I have a feeling that the previous owner was wrong or the clutches are worn out.

Thanks for any help you can provide, I'm really excited to learn more about this car, I know I need to adjust the idle (the car will take off and even shift to 2nd gear without me ever touching the gas..) but I figured a working tach would be in order first.

Anybody? I'm trying to get this car back into full working order. Doesn't anyone know about the tach/speedo on an 87?

Re: New member, got some wiring ?'s

give it some time its a lot of questions

cant help with the turnsignals, never delt with them

tach wire connects to the dizzy, i think its a brown wire, connects next to the powers tail on a HEI, i dont know what the old owner used or did.

birds have an electric speedo, its a purple and a yellow wire. Should be hangin by the trans, and should have a plug on it. connects on the driverside near the rear of the trans.

as for the rear, only real way to know is to pop off the cover and take a look for yourself. Its probably due for a fluid change anyway

Re: New member, got some wiring ?'s

Thanks alot, now at least I'll know what color wires I'm looking for.

I did a search and apparently the blinker flashing unit is somewhere behind what used to be my OBD port. I'll take a look this afternoon when I'm out changing my hatch struts.

Thanks again!
