Cruise control problem
I am restoring my 84 Z28 and right now I am in the process of doing some rewiring (getting rid of the aftermarket alarm, radio, etc.). One thing I just remembered was about 5 years ago, I used the cruise control and it worked perfectly. The problem was when I applied the brake, instead of the cruise control shutting off, it decided to speed up so when I engaged the clutch, the RPM's rose up quickly and luckly I shut down the engine right before it red lined. Basically I never have used cruise control since then. Since I am rewiring the car, I figured I would fix the problem, the problem is I have NO idea where to start diagnosing. Anyone have ANY ideas or heard of this problem?
More about the car, it's a 1984 Z28 H.O., 5-speed.
Thanks,
Cory

Re: Cruise control problem
make sure the switches that touch the brake pedal arm are not stuck, look above the pedal,
next I would change the cruse unit on the fender.

The following is from an 85, but it may prove useful:

Something I just realized about the car. I forgot years ago there was a problem with the clutch safety switch, so my Dad actually removed it completely rather than replacing it. I know the safety switch prevents you from starting the car without pressing the clutch, but do you think it caused the problem stated above? (Not shutting down the cruise control)

Re: Cruise control problem
There are two switches on the clutch, one in the full-down position for safe starting and one in the full-up position for the cruise control. If your father disabled the latter, that would prevent your cruise control from turning off when you depress the clutch pedal.

Well I know I need one, but I don't know what it looks like so I can pull one out of a salvage. Does anyone have a picture they can send me of what a clutch safety switch looks like. I need it for my 84 Z28.

Re: Cruise control problem
For the cruise control to work right, you don't need the clutch safety switch, you need the cruise control disable switch.
It's the same as the brake (stop lamp) switch: http://www.partsamerica.com:80/Produ...tNumber=SLS101
If you do need the clutch safety switch, it looks like this: http://www.partsamerica.com:80/Produ...Number=NS36831
(you might need to punch in your zipcode to show the part)
Hope this helps.
