Toggle switches are burning hot.

Ok, So here is my problem. I finally have working fans that will take my temp from 260-160 in less than 5 minutes. Great huh? Well, I wanted a little bit more control, so I can keep the temp more where I want it. I've got 2 toggle switches and they both work, If I turn on just one fan, my temp will virtually stay where ever it is currently at. If I turn on the second with the first, the engine cools significantly. These are the Spal Dual 11" fans from Jaycorpstech.com
Now for the problem. Everytime I go into the city, I have to leave the fans on for a significant amount of time. The first switch gets REALLY hot to touch after awhile. I haven't installed them yet for this reason, I don't want them to melt the plastic in the area I'm installing them. I would really like to just get them from burning up. I'm not sure how many amps the battery is creating. It's just a normal battery from the parts store, not an Optima or anything.
I don't want to wire them so they turn on when the car does. I want to get these switches to work. Any ideas? Switches that can hold a larger amp was my only guess. I also have two 4-prong relays, I know they go before the switch, one prong to the ground, one hot, and the other two? I'm not sure how they would work.
I appreciate all the help. I tried to be as detailed as possible. Thanks guys. Much love for the F-bod fam.

Re: Toggle switches are burning hot.

you need to get a switch rated for the load, i would recommend at least a 15A rating and they MUST be rated for DC current, not just AC current.

You could run a relay, just run the power through the relay, then run the coil wires to the toggle switch

See, I have no clue how to run that relay. Like what wires would go to what. And you would actually step DOWN from the 25A to a 15A? or is that considered a step up when it comes to this?

Re: Toggle switches are burning hot.

hey, run a relay, or a 50 amp switch, i got my 50 amp switch at a truck stop, in the trucker lighting area...... it worked fine, but i went to a relay set up for the heck of it

^that link is to a post where i helped someone do a relay with his fog lights, use my drawings to help you wire your relay, just replace fans for the fog lights

Even a high amperage switch may get hot, I recommend a relay. They are simple to hook up, just look at the diagram printed on most.

no i just tossed the 15a minimum out there, the fan does not draw more than that so you dont really need larger, but you must remember to use a switch that is rated for DC current as the contracts in the switch are different and are better at reducing arcing/degradation of the contacts when you use the switch. Though a relay is the ideal way.
I have a toggle working my extra fan, and ive never had any issues with it.

I agree with wiring in a relay for each fan. You may find the fans work better also because they can draw more power through a relay compared to a switch.

Re: Toggle switches are burning hot.

the company you bought the fan from sells a wiring kit that includes a 40amp relay and instructions.

http://www.jaycorptech.com/showprodu...&categoryid=19

also the specs on the dual 11" fan shows that it draws up to 36 amps...could be a reason why its trying to melt a 25 amp switch

http://www.jaycorptech.com/showprodu...4&categoryid=2

btw thanks for the url for this company cool stuff on their site

Re: Toggle switches are burning hot.

Wow, haha ya know? Your right, it DID come with a relay and wiring harness. I worked on the water pump while my buddy did the fans, because he was better with electrical stuff, and we were tryin to get it done quick for the cruise that night. It actually came with 2 relays and such. Those wires are the ones we used, we just ran them differently. So I guess I DO need relays in there, and I will be installing them ASAP.
No problem for the referall. These fans SERIOUSLY kick ***. The cool your car so fast.
