Battery Issues?

Hi Guys,

I've recently purchased a 1991 V6 Firebird, which has started no problem each time I've used it, well until this morning and it had been frosty here in the UK!

All the usual ignition lights came on and it went to turnover then everything went off. I tried again and this time no ignition lights either! I tried putting the parking/side lights on and nothing! :-(

I'm thinking that battery has died but I measured the voltage and it said 12.3 volts, I even tried to jump start it with my other car but the ignition lights didn't come on then either!

Can anyone tell me if it's the battery or some other electrical fault, as this is the first time I've owned a US car?

Thanks guys, appreciated.

Ian - UK

P.S I cross posted this in the Engine Tech forum too as it seems to apply to both groups.

Anytime you seem to have an electrical problem, the best place to start is the fuse panel. If you have a digital multimeter, you can test each fuse very quickly, and tell if it's blown or not. If you don't have one, just pull the fuses, and give them a good inspection. In your case, it sounds as though you've either popped a fuse, or have a bad connection somewhere.

It sounds very much like you fried one or more of your fusible links on the starter. I would start there since you have no power to the interior of the car including headlights. They are easy to see when under the car, 3 wires coming off the starter solenoid. thicker parts are the fusible links.

Re: Battery Issues?

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your help and I'm pleased to say I've managed to figure it out :-) The +ve terminal while fixed ok on the battery was actually loose and corroded at the eyelet!

Thanks again,

Ian
