Power antenna problem

hey yall. well i have some questions. i have an 84 camaro z28 with what i assume is a power antenna (either that or you can just adjust how long it is! lol) but the power antenna is not working. i have to pull it up or push it down. first question, is my power antenna not working because it has had a big block swap (427 carbed) and doesnt have all the electronics that went with the original motor or is the antenna motor burnt out? it has the original radio in it (am/fm casette) and it works fine. i would assume that even with the big block swap the radio would have an antenna lead that triggers the antenna to extend when it powers on (kind of like the antenna lead for an amplifier for a stereo system). second question is, if the antenna motor has burnt out, how do i get to the motor and where can i get a new one? any help on this would be greatly appreciated. thanks yall!

The relay is under the dash, pass side. Remove the pass tire and the plastic inner fender panel. There's a kit available should the problem be the mast itself. I think that GM has discontinued the OE antenna, but there are various universal kits around.

Re: Power antenna problem

thanks for the info james. by the way, if the relay is burnt out, how can i tell other than putting a new one in and trying it? also, would it be any easier to just do away with the power antenna and just do a fixed one? i dont know what has been done to the wiring in my camaro since i just got it a few months ago before my dad went to iraq and it already had the big block swap done to it. i guess the main problems with it are the speedo and gas gauge dont work (speedo is in the gear in the tranny i believe and the gas gauge is in the sending unit, hopefully dont have to replace it) so the power antenna is the least of my worries, but it would be nice if it worked. thanks again james. i appreciate it.

The relay should "click" when you turn the radio on. Swapping to a fixed mast shouldn't be a particular problem and it would probably be cheaper in the end. Your 84 should have a mechanical speedo, so I'd check the cable itself. A search will provide the info you'd need to determine whether you need sender or gauge.

Re: Power antenna problem

Actually it's not that much of a pain. If it's in the front passenger's fender like mine, which i'm sure it is, it's not that bad. Mine had gone out and i bought a universal antenna and realized it won't fit. The power antenna's in our cars have what i call a remote motor then flexible tube to the mast. The only place i found one was at JcWhitney. Here's a link.....

I haven't had any problems since getting this antenna. The hardest part was getting the antenna line into the car thru the firewall. Other then that, it wasn't that bad of a job. Hope this helps.
