speedometer problem

hey i have an 85 trans am with a mech speedometer and i ordered a tranny swap that came with a 92 W/C tranny with a electric speedometer sending unit, i was wondering wat parts i need and wat to do to make an electric speedometer work. I ordered a summit sending unit for the tranny but it doesnt seem to fit or look like the sending unit thats in the tranny already, even though its supposed to fit all GM vehicles...

thanks for any help =]

If you want the mechanical speedo to work, simply swap the drive and/or driven gear to the new tranny.

Re: speedometer problem

You can't just swap the speedometer pickup from a 700r4 into a T5, the sizes are different.

You will need to go to a GM stealership and buy a pickup for a mechanical speedometer cable and the right plastic gear for your differential and tire combination.

Summit probably sent you a pickup for an automatic tranny if it doesn't fit.

Hope this helps.

Re: speedometer problem

no no no i have a t5 tranny that im swapping into the car.... my 700r4 is mech i dont care about that. I'm putting in the t5 which has a electronic speedometer sending unit on it already, i was wondering do I even need to order a sending unit for my new electric speedometer i ordered? I tried rigging up the speedometer to the sending unit on the trans but i couldnt get the speedometer to respond and yes i had the wires connected to a ground and positive but i just couldnt get a response out of it (ALSO the speedometer is a summit electric speedometer)

Re: speedometer problem

Oh, so you will be installing a 90+ electronic speecometer as well?
In that case, you can reuse the VSS in the T5, no problem.
But you would need to find out whether the plastic gear on it matches your rear differential and tire combo. If not, you'd have to order a different plastic gear through the stealership.
