What thread type are the battery bolts?

My car is 21 years old; I have worn out the thread on the negative terminal to the battery. I have never heard of anyone ever doing this, but I have.

I am wondering if I should replace the whole main negative lead or simply replace the battery bolt. The negative ground wire to the battery is in excellent shape. The car has never been in salt, nor driven alot in rain, and its stored winters where I had been disconnecting the negative lead to the battery. i have done this so many times that the bolt is wore out.

Dyno Don, thanks, 3/8 thread is 3/8" in diameter, what is the pitch? Is that the USS that you show? I dont know what this is. I simply know pipe thread, course and fine thread.

Also, I have never removed a battery bolt from the connector. Does this bolt push out? And where would I buy one? Auto-Zone maybe?

I think they are 3/8-16, which is national course. Yep, the bolts just push out of the cable ends. You can get new ones at Wal-Mart, Autozone, etc.

Re: What thread type are the battery bolts?

I got the specific replacement ones at Autozone, that have bigger than standard heads, that allow jumpercables to be attached.

Standard battery bolt heads are so small, it was always hard to get a jumper cable to clamp on the head.

Re: What thread type are the battery bolts?

I bought the standard battery bolts at AutoZone this morning. They have the same small head on them, the standard Chevy battery wrench works on them. I am good to go!
