what alternator is right

Hey i have an 86 tpi 305 camaro, i need to get a new alternator, all the sites show many different amp models. anyone know what is the right one for me ? thanks Nate

You should have the high amp alternator which is 108 or so amps. I believe it is a 17si alternator.

I also have an 86 TPI and the alternator that came with it was a 108 amp alternator.


Optional:
If you have time (meaning you can have the car down for awhile and can afford an upgrade) look at converting to a 140 amp CS144 alternator off of a 96 caprice. You would need a wiring connector harness to convert from the 17SI style alternator to the new CS144 style. (alternatorparts.com) Also you would have to get a bigger wire from the back of the alternator to the battery.

I traded my 17SI under warranty from Autozone for the CS144 style and have not had it go out on me yet. I broke about 10 of those 108 amp alternators under warranty.
