Ignition problem, can't turn key far enough

85 IROC. The ignition had been fussy lately and I'd have to wiggle a bit to turn the key far enough to start the car. Well today no luck at all. Turned the key to the on position and it would go no further. Then I couldn't even turn it back to off so I had to disconnect the battery. Fortunately (or unfortunately I'm really not sure) the key comes right out no problem in the on position that it's currently stuck in. I've got no experience with steering columns so any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I would put a new ignition switch in first. And if that is not it then put a new ignition cyl lock in. The ignition switch is at the bottem top of the column.

New ignition switch? I wouldn't think it's an electrical problem at all because the car starts just fine when you can turn the key all the way. Am I wrong thinking it's a mechanical problem not an electrical one?

sounds like the lock cylinder is wore out/broken.

Do you also have tilt steering? Moving it up and down may get the lock cyl. back to off.
