Help! How to wire my alternator

i bought a new oem alternator and a new battery and a new plug that goes into the alternator. my mechanic switched my sideposts to top posts. Now I have 2 wires that come out of my alternator one goes to ignition and one goes to the back of the alternator, and the battery has a ground that goes to body and the main wire runs to the block. the positive runs to the starter and has no secondary wire that runs to the wire. Is this why my new battery keeps going dead and my voltmeter in the car never goes past 11volts unless you put booster cables on then its 13 volts. What i want to know is it safe for me and the car to buy a new positive top post with the secondary wire and run the secondary to the back of the alternator with the other wire? This is how my cutlass is setup. I am thinkin this slipped my mechanics mind as he had lots to do.

Re: Help! How to wire my alternator

so i looked for a top post with attached wire, but could not find one with a heavy gauge alternator wire, so i used a 12G wire now my car runs at 14volts and seems to work fine does anyone know if the 12G wire is acceptable?
