I also have a Chilton's manual, should the solution or info about it be in that book

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

It should go off after you start the car. If it doesnt maybe you have a wiring problem? Usually if it stays on it means your airbag isnt working

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

my light comes on all the time while im driving too and blinks every once in awhile. i was just gonna probably remove the steering wheel and put an 86 or 87 3 spoke firebird wheel on there.unless someones knows what the problem might be lol.

Your airbag sensors are f*cked.

So replacing them would solve the problem?

And if they are f'd up would that mean that the bag can explode whenever it wants to, or will it not inflate at all?

I turned on the car this morning and notice that it does blink 7x's but it still stays on afterwards

Re: What Does INFL REST mean?

The system goes thru diagnostics and if it seems something wrong it lights the light. I haven't worked on these in a while. There is a way to plug in and rtetrieve the stored codes - if the light stays lit there should be stored codes to point to the problem.

No. Replacing parts without proper diagnostics leads to money and time spent that may not resolve the issue. There are about 18 trouble codes that could be produced. The INFL REST lamp being on is much like the Service Engine Soon light being on. It could be on for one or more different reasons. There are sensors and wiring involved.

You can read the current codes by grounding terminal K of the ALDL connector while the ignition switch is ON. This will result in the system going into "Flash Code" mode and flashing the INFL REST lamp, which you will have to decode to produce the proper trouble code.

This is how GM describes reading the INFL REST lamp once in "Flash Code" mode:
Each code displayed consists of a number of flashes which represents the tens or first digit, a 1/2 second pause, then a number of flashes which represent the ones or second digit of the code. Each code is flashed once before moving on to the next code. After all codes have been displayed, the entire code sequence will be repeated until ground is removed from terminal K of the ALDL connector.
In addition:
Two special codes exist when reading in the "Flash Code" mode, Code 12 and Code 13. Code 12 will always be the first code displayed when the "Flash Code" mode is enabled. Code 12 is not an indication of a SIR fault, but an indication that the "Flash Code" mode has been enabled. If there are no current or history codes present the DERM will continue to flash Code 12 until ground is removed from the ALDL connector at terminal K. Code 13 will be displayed if there are history codes. To read the history codes, use of a Tech 1 is required.
If you can figure out the code, we may be able to help point you in the proper direction.
