headlight motors stopped working

Hi,
This morning I had no headlights...wont open. Also no gauge lights. Checked the fuses, seem ok. Downloaded wiring diagram, should be this one, but not very good with electronics. Any suggestions? Mayby a relay?

thanks for helping out! Must have headlights in daytime here in Sweden, otherwise fines...

Re: headlight motors stopped working

If its not a fuse issue, and you cant see any obvious wire issues, then my "guess" will be the headlight switch. Since you said none of the lights work, and the instrument lights arent working either.

Are the headlights just not popping up? Or arent they coming on eitehr? I just re-read the post... Clarify what exactly is/isnt working, and we'll go from there.

Re: headlight motors stopped working

Hi, and thanks for the reply,
Lights do come on (just checked this), but wont open. Both were fine yesterday and the motors I switched not long ago..I checked all the fuses, and if I understand things right this one should be 20amps. All look fine....
As I said Im not very good at this..but could it be the "isolation relay". If I read the diagram right, this would explain why none of them is working? If so, where do I find this relay? There are two relays on firewall, drivers side, any of these?
Would You happen to have gm part no?

regards
Hasse

So all the lights light up as they are supposed to... But your instrument panel lights dont work?

What year is your car buddy?

Im still thinking it might be a switch issue...

Ooops, instrument lights do work, just didnt see them in daylight...so only thing that doesnt work is motors. Lights dont pop up. Found the isolation relay but dont have a multimeter. Seems difficult to open to check for burn damage. Checked price here in Sweden, its 90 dollars!
No way these guys will survive e-trade....

Re: headlight motors stopped working

There are 3 relays, at least in my car. There is one on each side of the fender near the headlights themselves and one on the driver side near but not on the firewall. It's near the hood hinge, all three generally look the same.

With your headlights on, give them a light tap with the handle end of a screwdriver or something similar and see if they pop up.

Another thing to try, with the lights off, is turn the manual lift ***** counter clockwise until they start to feel like the slack has been taken out and begin to get harder to turn. Stop there, and try to turn the lights on and see if they pop up.

That's what I did for mine and they work now, hopefully it'll work for you too. Don't turn the **** counter clockwise too much though, probably not good for it. I turned mine till I heard a click, but try yours till snug first.

Re: headlight motors stopped working

Ok. Knowing that everything lights up, and that your car is an 85, Im changing my theory to relay.

I just got an 86 not too long ago, with the older style relay system. I hated it. The motors were noisy and slow. And the relays were all over the place. So I swapped in the newer style motors that use the control module.

Anyway..thats besides the point. I would do as suggested. Tap the relays to see if maybe one got stuck, or got some moisture in it or something. I think fyrstorm is right on relay placement...my memory isnt 100% from when I took the wiring out.

Good luck man! Hope you get her figured out!

Re: headlight motors stopped working

Im having the same problem, but only with my driver's side headlight. I know its not the motor, so it has to be something electrical. Did you get yours to work? What did you do?...Im a newbie
