radio troubles
so i bout my 86 iroc z a while ago and when i bout it i was told that it had no radio and that i could just put one in, so i did that, put in a new stereo and speakers and then what happened was that the fuse kept going out so i took it to an auto electric shop since i dont like dealing with wires and they found out it was the cigarette lighter, they took it out, it still did it, so they did some stuff, then it still kept happening so they gave me my money back, anyways it worked for a while after that , it didnt blow out the fuse, but it would turn off on me, but if i moved the center storage thing between the front seats, it would kinda work and if i moved it up and put a book under it to hold it up it would allow the radio to stay on, but now, nothing works, so im wondering if anything wonders what it could be or atleast where i should start lookin

Re: radio troubles
I don't think there's any shortcuts to be found in this case. Anything can be the fault here, from a loose connection, bare wiring out of a connector, chafed or pinched wiring, to a screw poking into a wire bundle. Disliking wires is not going to get you anywhere, and having a shop to do it will be too costly. It's going to take quite some time & work to find the culprit.
I'd start with replacing the fuse with a 21W lamp (in a socket with a few inches of wire with flat spade terminals on). That way you can work on the center console & wiring while keeping an eye on the light. When the lamp lights fully up you have found the short.
You may also have a loose connection in the wiring to the radio (either in the power or the ground wire). To find this you can insert the same lamp in place of the radio. Whenever it dims you have found a problem.
I believe radio constant power wires are orange, switched power wires are yellow, and ground wires are black & white (or just black).

Re: radio troubles
I often use just a lighter. Just keep a small flame, and hold the sleeve a bit over the top of the flame. It's plenty hot enough half an inch above, and it doesn't catch fire so easily nor soot the sleeve then. Move the flame back & forth while twisting the wire & sleeve around. Good luck hunting..
