Starter Clicks Repeatedly

I just got back to working on my '86 Iroc which has a TPI 305 with A/T.

1.) While laying new carpet it appears that I disconnected the wires from the gear selector switch. I looked in my haynes manual and it looks like the purple and yellow wires connect to this switch, however there are 4 contacts for this switch, which is really 2 switches. Do any additional wires need to be connected to this switch?

2.) When I connected the purple and yellow wires to the gear selector switch and turned the ignition, the starter sputters or clicks repeatedly, but the engine does not turn over. Is this possibly a ground issue?

Thank you for any Help!

Sounds to me like your battery is low. The solenoid will engage but it doesn't have the power to turn the engine over. The wires should be for the neutral safety switch and the backup lights. My guess is there should be at least 4 wires going there.

Thanks, it was just a low charge on the battery.
