Vehicle Speed Sensor ??? how to test

I Need information on the VSS in a 1988 trans-am with a 305 TPI.
I think it produces 2000 pulses per mile.
12vdc pulses? Can anyone help me troubleshoot please

THE NEED FOR SPEED . . . . . . . . . SENSOR

The VSS outputs AC which is converted to DC VIA a buffer or the ECM depending on engine configuration.

To test the VSS connect an oscilloscope to observe the waveform.

In lieu of a scope use an audio amplifier.

Re: Vehicle Speed Sensor ??? how to test

Try this: locate the VSS pin on the ECM and hook a voltmeter to it. Moving the car real slow (with ignition) on should make the meter jump up & down if it has an optical speedometer sensor with buffer. If it has an inductive tranny mounted speed sensor you'll need a little more speed and a scope to see what happens. Or use the audio method as NINÅ suggests, it also works. A 10k resistor in series with a pair of earphones is the simplest method.
