speedo not working

tried everything that I can think of which was change the trans sensor, swapped the speedo cluster, the ECM and buffer and still no luck (speedo tops out when only going about 15mph then it goes to 0 then stays untill you slow to a stop then it will do the same when you speed back up)
Any suggestions

Welcome to TGO. Perhaps the drive gear is toast.

Re: speedo not working

So both the drive and driven gears were good?

Re: speedo not working

Well, if all the parts are correct (and working as they should) and hooked up correctly, the speedo should work. Do the other gauges function as designed? Sorry I can't offer more than that. A search might provide some info/clues that would be more helpful.

Re: speedo not working

You may need to trace the speedo wire and check for shorts. The signal may be getting shorted to ground or there is high resistance. Are the parts you swapped new or known good? Is there someone you know with a similar year that you can trouble shoot with?

Connect an OBD1 scanner to the ALDL.

Drive.

See if the scanner reports speed properly.

If it does your VSS, buffer, and ECM are functioning properly.

Now with a signal generator apply 60CPS to terminal 3 on the dash PCB.

A good speedo will read 54MPH.

Re: speedo not working

i have a 91 rs with basically the same problem. i have been messing with this all night mine will randomly wotrk and then it won't. mos 0f the time it is on flat 0 or whatever. mine has a short I found that out because i pulled out the senser in the tranny (the one with 1 bolt holding it in and has two wires coming out my wires are purple and yellow) i clened it up and unplugged the wires and stuff fom the tranny. ( when you pull this piece out tranny fluid will come out if tilted in any way so try to do it flat on a lift.) and then just reconnected it cause i couldnt figure the problem but then i drove my car and it worked. then i shut off the car told everyone it worked and started he car again and it didnt work. so i found out there was a short from some of the wires somewhere connected to that. So that could be your poroblem too or it could be that sensr i ws talking abou but i'd say its not worth wasting 100 dollars on and not worth going to mechanic and wasting even more money so check the wires and look for the short my suggestion would be to just get all new wires for that piece then see whats going on and after that then mayb buy the piece if it still doesnt work. I just wish someone could send me a diagram of how the wires are set up behind the dash and gauges before i rip out my wires. so if anyone can give me a sit or send me a diagram of how the wires touch the speedo that would b great. thanks for the help and hope that helped you

Re: speedo not working

yeah, the only problem is which gear to get with howe many of these transmissions they made... That what I'm leaning towards to now is a new gear that fits right, I just got one from the dealer and put it in and now my speed ometer only works when i let off the gas. when i press the gas it hits zero when i let off it tends to work some what accuratley. such a pain..

My speedometer just doesn't work at all... It never budges. Stays on 0 and I have no idea why.

Re: speedo not working

yeah mine did that before i changed the gears. out of curiousity [if yours ias a electric and not a cable (1991+ is electric in the camaro)], have you taken out the speed sensor and disattached the wire and then plugged it all back in and put it all back toge6ther after cleaning in up a bit cause i did that with the gear that was in and my car and then it would work no matter how far i drove as long as the car didn't get shut off. so my suggestion is do that see what happens. cause yeah thats what mine did but only for that one ride right after i took it out and apart ands put it back together and then started the car. and then we kinda decided that it was the gears now i got a gear with more teeth, same size of course, and now it tends to work once the car has been warmed up so basically driving 4 miles straight gets it to work half decently so now i might go up one more size. cause mine works now just not to the extent i want.

Not to offend but, not sure you've told the "whole story". Sounds like your piecing parts from one vehicle or another trying to get it to all work?

If the car your working on came with the 700r4 that's in the car now, call the GM parts dealer with the VIN number. They can give you the correct VSS vehicle speed sensor number and correct driven gear (tooth count/color) that works with the drive gear inside the trans tail housing. Make sure you check the color of that also. Otherwise, it's a dog gone crap shoot.
