Re: 1990 vats location

I'm with you on this one. My son's 90 RS V6 car was running fine and then it would not start or crank over even. I was able to bypass the start relay to get it to crank but it still didn't fire. It was 3 days later that I pulled the key out of the ignition and found that he had lost the pellet out of the key!! And of course it's the only key he had. So I bought the Baker Electronix bypass module but I can't figure out where the hell to hook it up. It says the dark blue wire that runs to the ECM but there are several. I can't finfd the VATS module either! This car will burn if I don't figure it out soon. Any help out there??

Re: 1990 vats location

The VATS module is well hidden in the dash. Why of course, it tries to keep your car in your garage/driveway. It would be pointless if any teenager could just reach in and yank it out.
I found mine on the back of the dash, somewhere above the heater core. But I cannot tell you 100%, it's been a long time.
Just look for a black box, about 3"x5", maybe 1.5" thick. It has the following wire colors: black/yellow, orange, grey, pink/black, dk blue, white/black, purple/white, black/white. You're bound to find it if the dash is out.

Hope this helps.

I am with you on the burning thing!!! I have done an LT1 swap and had the VATS removed from the LT1 ECM but the car will not crank unless I use a jumper wire on the start rely but it will start and then die.

Re: 1990 vats location

I just recieved the 15 pack of pre-made resistors from Sonic and am going to try them out and see what happens. I'll let you guys know.

I gave up on trying to find the VATS module. I think they built the car around it.

Almost.
the vats Module will be connected to the back side of the defroster ducts, on the right side. this means that you have to take out the dash, dash support, and all air ducts.
after doing my research if you are running you stock ECM, removing the vats module and grounding the start relay, your car will not run, with out the ECM being reprogrammed. the ECM will look for a coded sycle from the VATS Module. (will say PASS KEY on it)

if you find out the resistance on the diode in the key you can put a diode in the harness I forgot where and presto

Just for clarification, it's not a diode, it's a resistor.
Yes, you can solder the resistor into the car permanently but that would completely defeat the purpose of the theft-deterrent system and any high-school drop-put retard can start your car with a screwdriver.
Also, if the problem is in the VATS module or wiring, the resistor bypass won't help at all.

Re: 1990 vats location

Just as I was down to my last 2 resistors and I was ready to give up the car started!!!!

I bought a 15 pack of pre made resistors for GM VATS Bypass from Sonic Electronix for $1.98 and like $5 shipping.

I tried them one by one waiting 5 minutes in between so the ECM would reset and presto!

I know it can be stolen easier now but we live in the country and it has a decent aftermarket alarm anyway. It also is just the V6 RS and so nothing special.

These guys have some great stuff- http://www.sonicelectronix.com/searc...&action=search

I hope this helps you guys.

Chances are the actual VATS module will not go out. My problem was that we only had 1 key and we lost the pellet so had no way of knowing what the resistance would have been. I'm so glad it started because I seriously was going to fire up the bulldozer and start crushing.

PM/Email me if you need any help

Re: 1990 vats location

the key is that the car runs right now

later you can figure a way to keep those pesky thief out

the vats system is outdated and any seasoned thief is aware of it

Re: 1990 vats location

Hey guys, hate to bring up an ancient thread, but would the location of the VATs module be the same in an 89 IROC? I've been digging around the forum for awhile and I haven't been able to find anything regarding the actual location other than this thread.
