As I began driving home yesterday I noticed my spedometer was not working and the check engine came on. I checked it and a error code 24 came up. I'm not sure where to start looking, from other threads it looks like it might be a vss problem? I'm not sure, please send me in the right direction!

 

Since your 87 is cable driven, I suggest that the fault lies with the cable or speedo head. If either of those is bad, the VSS can't function and will throw a code 24, IIRC.

also, the trip has been dead for a while and odo was reading extremely high this past weekend, if that narrows it down any...

Sounds like the speedo head, but you'd be remiss not to also check the cable. At any rate, if the speedo isn't working, there are only three possibilities: drive/driven gears have broken, the cable itself has severed, or the speedo head is bad.
