Another "whats this wire for??" question. Alternator wire..

okay so heres my problem, i switched over to carb and and this wire connects to the alternator by a bolt, and runs with the same harness as the starter/battery wires. does this wire connect to the starter, or does it connect to that black box that the battery connects to behine the passenger side headlight? or is it a ground... what the hell is it!! i been thinkin all day about how my alternator is going to charge the battery and i thought maybe this wire charged it? but it looks like a ground, yet it has the same gauge of wire that starters have.. anybody can help me?? heres a picture of the full wire.

and before anybody asks, no im not keeping the alternator and p/s pump bracket that color, i had to modify some things so i just had to make sure it all fit.
