i have a 92 camaro rs 5.0 tbi. just got the car, vats module is gone, and the keys were thrown in a fire and the chip is gone. dealer wants like 400 for the box and key. hell no. no junkyards are able to sell me the box and key. or will any vats module work. my dad says take a module with a matching key, put the two white wires on the chip, tape it up, and let the key hang in the collum. and use a non vats ignition and key, he just did one and it works, but i cant find the part. does anyone on here have one, ive already posted in the for sale area, but no luck. but anyways.... is there anyway to bypass the vats system in my case, having no box and no chip, and i dont know the resistance. but on the oem key, there is a 2 stamped where the black coating is supposta be, the part you handle when using the key. i dont have money to spend on a new module, or a credit card for ebay or anything. can i just connect some wires or something.
i read that you can use another non vats ecm, i have an 87 iroc, but cant use that, but i have an 86 2.8 ecm that dont use vats, will that work.
how can i do this??? im using this car as a daily driver, and dont have anything to drive at this point, so im in a rush. sorry for the long post, please help
thanks in advance

Besides continuing your search for a non vats 5.0tbi(auto?? or stick?? that is key also) ecm, the only other option being you don't know the resistance is to have the VATS disabled within your ecm. I would check with local fbody guys in your area and see if anyone will hook you up(of course you will have to pay for the adapter and new chip.) If not try a performance shop, they more than likely can do something for you although I don't know much they will charge you.
OR
I just did a search, took me 2 seconds to do....read this thread, https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...able-vats.html It does have a diagram showing all the different resistances but since you don't have the module, I don't think any of that will matter.

vats only does one thing - it asks the key to send it a resistor response. wrong resistor and vats takes a nap, for 4 minutes.'
but the vats is activated when the ecm sends a signal saying aer you the same. if you are send me a tickle. when it gets the tickle it know to push the rest of the start program through.
so either get your chip reworked so that it will not ask for a vat - no problem.
the other way is to get the vat and key at the same time.
the ecm does not care what the resistence is - just as long as its there.
look here https://www.thirdgen.org/vats_passkey_system and here https://www.thirdgen.org/vats and here https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...umns-have.html

thanks, im gonna try to hunt down the blank number and go to radio shack for resistors, lol, the dealer wants 35 bucks for a key, hell no!! thats rediculous, yea, it might be worth it, but then if the ignition goes bad or i lose a key, its like a buck to copy and like 10 bucks for the ignition. sounds good to me... i finally got the kid i got the car from over here to look at the wiring, he says he dont know what that is, but he never touched it or unplugged anything, that the car ran with it like that. i trust him.
thanks everyone for your help
ill probably be back to this board for more help. lol

The car ran with it like that....before the key went into the fire??

That big white plug, the square one, and the relays wrapped in tape are all from an aftermarket alarm or remote start. I would pull it out one wire at a time and reconnect all the factory stuff. Then get a fresh start with your VATS. How do you know the module is gone? It is a bear to get at.
yea, the key was thrown in the fire and thats half the reason why he didnt drive it, the other half he was gonna re build it.
i thought it was the vats cuz the starter wouldnt turn over or anything, cuz the key was missing, well the chip anyways
but this morning i went to radio shack, got the resistors, tried it out, it worked, so i finished all the work to the motor and it ran GREAT, besides the bad thermostat housing gasket, ill get that and the thermostat in the morning along with probably doing the floors.
