Trouble Codes 23 and 32
I have an 89 RS.
I used the Assembly line diagnostic terminal the other day and got codes 23 and 32. It's the EGR system, exhaust gas recirculation (?) which if my understanding is correct, pumps exhaust gas back through the engine to cheat the emissions tests.
The other one is the Air Temperature Sensor, I think. The check engine light usually comes on when I go from highway speed down to city speed.
I really dont know the first place to start on either of these systems, and the Haynes manual is a fat whopping no help at all.
I was probably going to just replace the sensors if they're cheap enough, wipe the memory and see if they come back.
Any ideas?

Re: Trouble Codes 23 and 32
23 is often set when the IAT sensor is disconnected. Check the wires and connector.
32 is for EGR, true. You're lucky, though, the whole EGR system is so easily accessible on your engine, you don't have an excuse to ignore it.
Try fixing it on TPI.

I'd search for the troubleshooting diagram for EGR, it's pretty simple and will tell you which component is bad and needs to be replaced.
Hope this helps.

For the code 32 try replacing your gas cap with a new one first. I found out about that after I spent a couple hundred $$$'s on all new EGR parts just to keep throwing the 32.
Re: Trouble Codes 23 and 32
I have replaced the EGR and EGR Vacuum Solenoid and still get this code randomly. Sometimes on the way to work, and then not on the way home. SES light then turns off after about 2 minutes. Could it be the gas cap?

my 89RS would kick on the SES light after i drove it about 10 min then would stay on till i shut it off. it was a code 32 so i replaced the EGR valve on top oth engine and if fixed it. never had problem with the light coming on agian.
One of the vacume lines going to the EGR could be bad with a small leak in it also to cause that problem

Thread resurrections... Gnarly...
You might also check the electrical gizmo that toggles the vacuum line on and off between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. Those things seem to die, sometimes.
I ended up blocking off my EGR valve like every other red blooded american. My valve was so clogged with carbon build up, it was open all the time, though. Do your research, though. There's an engine timing issue to consider when doing this.
