Alternator help

I am new to the site and a complete idiot when it comes to most things electrical about cars. I know a few things this is actually my first sports car. I have an 84 trans am 5.0 v8 i love the car frankly otherwise i probably wouldnt have bought it. The alternator looks new in comparison to most parts on the vehicle. i know that means little and it could be blown however after close examination of the alternator i realized there are no wires leading directly to the battery and a wire on top that just dangles and is twisted in with some other wire. main question is should there be a wire connected to the battery? second question is can anyone give me a lamens description on how to wire this correctly. No offense to anyone here but whoever owned this car previously was an idiot and didnt have some basic parts on the car. it appears that they attempted to wire the alternator but got lost and gave up.
Please help i wanna get my baby up and running!
