delay/non-delay wiper switches

I think there are 6+ or so different indicator stalks, some with cruise, some without. Some have delay wipers, some don't

I think I need to replace the wiper switch at the base of the stalk, it's a black unit which the wiper/indicator stick plugs into. I managed to get the old stalk out, but I can't get the new one to slot into the wiper position. Most of the stalk is in, so the indicators are working, but there is a notch which needs to move into the right place to change the wipers. I suspect I've ground some of the plastic out trying to get the metal notch into the right place....

Does anyone know if there are different parts numbers for the switch at the base (depending on if the wipers are delayed or not)? I found one on a site, not sure if there are others

Thanks

Where did you get your stalk from? I haven't pulled mine out yet, but it has heaps of slack in it, so the switch is separate to the stalk? weird...

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

You both are talking about different switches. Yes, there are 2 wiper switches. VAN, the turn signal stalk is remotely connected to the switch that wraps around the steering shaft. If the metal piece that connects the 2 wears too much into the socket (I think it's the wiper switch), you'll end up with slack. Unless the one screw came loose.

multi-function switch

brights and wipers together

therefore, hence a switch with multiple functions

Dude, they're 2 separate switches... The headlight dimmer switch is halfway down the column, on the left side, across and a little down from the ignition switch, and both are remotely operated. The wiper switch that the stalk plugs into has a lever on it that engages another lever that engages the relay rod between the column bowl assembly and the switch.

Our columns are complicated because there has to be an individual switch for each device (horn, turn signals, cruise control, wipers, ignition).

It was the screw, thanks mate. I do need to get another stalk though as the wires for the cruise control are broken and there isn't enough slack for me to solder them back. Anyone know were I can get a new or good second hand stalk? Remember I need to be able to get it shipped to me as I am in Australia

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

Any GM parts house can get you one for a ridiculous price. You can probably find them on eBay. I don't know how many junkyards there are over there, but I would think that the stalk is the same for most 80s cars and trucks that have cruise control. However, with our type of stalk and the fact that they fail quite often, finding a good one could be really hard.

:edit: On the TGO Tech Articles page, there is an article on how to replace the switches in the stalk with an outside set of 3 cheap switches so that you won't have to worry about replacing the expensive stalk again. However, you have to find a way to mount the switches.

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

Thanks mate, we have loads of junkyards (we call them wreckers), but no aussie delivered cars that I know of used this type of stalk, so I won't be able to get a second hand one here. I'll have to have a hunt around. Do you recommend any retailers that ship overseas? I have had dealings with TDS, and Summit but they don't seem to have this kind of thing.

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

If that's the case, then the best I can recommend for you is to check eBay. I'm pretty sure the stores I normally use don't ship overseas, being American auto parts houses.

I buy most things over the net from the USA, Top Down Solutions is greatfor parts, but they have a limited range, and summit is good too. Check out the sponsers and send them an email to see if they can ship stuff. And of course ebay

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

Rock Auto ships overseas. They carry the stalks. Be sure to grab a discount code from the vendor area of this board. I've bought a lot of parts from them. They ship in 2-3 days in the states.

Re: delay/non-delay wiper switches

I have a wiper / turn signal lever switch that I got some time ago but never installed.
If you're interested we can agree on a convenient price. Shipping charges could be a little high considering it goes from Colombia to Australia.
