horn problems

here's some background: one day i got real pissed, and punched the horn because someone was about to back into me in a parking garage (shows how smart people who go to college are!). after that, the horn would randomly go off as i was driving... it was embarassing. so one day, i got mad again, and ripped off the center cap. i didn't break anything...

so i realized that the connector for the wire (the one on the cap) was worn down. i went on ebay, and bought a new one. i broke that connector off the day i got it, so i went back to my old one, and sautered it down to fit.

i've been trying to connect everything again, but once i connect the wire and metal hits metal, the horn goes off. everything around the wire is metal... so, i have two questions:

1. how, exactly, is the horn supposed to work? what is supposed to touch what to make the horn go off?
2. how do i connect everything?

i'll try to get some pictures up here, in case nobody can understand what i'm talking about. i suck at explaining things.
