What does this wire control?

I replaced the alt. in my car and everything went smooth until I got to hooking up the 3 wire plug on the alt. The way the alt is constructed, the metal housing goes too far up for the 3 wire plug to "click" in. Its in there, but its not really snug.

Ever since I replaced that, my volt gage has been a little sporratic (sometimes reads about 10v, then take a turn, and goes back to 14), i'm wondering if one of those wires on that plug controls the voltage gage?

Oh btw, I know the volts can't be at 10, the alt. and battery are only about a week old.

Also, what are the parts of the "charging system," just the alt and battery right?

Thanks.

Those wires do not control the gage.

As to your shaky connector:

You need to replace, modify, or make a connector that you know makes contact all the time.

Then see if the problem has gone away.

Happy Racing!

Fog lights are not driving lights. They look dorky. Turn em off slow pokes.

How bout those dorks too scared to drive without headlights on in the daytime or if there is a little rain!

Re: Wire Mire

That connector powers the stator in you alternator, if it comes loose you alternator does not put out any voltage, which would cause you to drop to 10 volts. Fix the loose connector, fix your problem. :-)
