Wiring help with a 92' RS

I just bought a 92' rs recently and am rebuilding the engine. So far many wires are missing connectors or are broken. I was wondering which wires go to the starter and if I post pics someone can identify broken parts

best thing you could do is spend the $20 on a Haynes manual at your local auto parts store - that way you'll have it right in front of you instead of waiting here for an answer to every wire question. then, if you still have questions, we can help fill in the gaps.

Are you wiring it back stock, or are there mods done or to be done?

I do have a haynes manual but some of the pictures are really faded. RIght now I'm just trying to wire back to stock. I'll post some pictures of what I can't identify. thanks for the help

I beleive the Haynes missed the engine wiring schematics for the TBI motor as well - mine is missing it. But just follow the diagrams for the TPI motor, it's almost identical except more injector wires (pink/black) and MAF instead of MAP sensors.

First pic is the heater core diverter valve

Pick up a new one at any parts store or bypass it

Second is coolant temp sender, two wire style

Third is the intake air temp sensor that goes in the bottom of the breather pan

thanks pocket. next question. what color wires go to the starter. i gave the purple ignition on and the positive battery lead. also I have noticed some studs on the back of the heads and some broken wires. do I need to worry about those?

The heavy purple wire goes to the starter solenoid. You should have 2-3 additional heavy red wires with fusible links to the battery terminal on the starter as well. Do yourself a favor and test these before putting them on the starter

The wires bolted to the rear of the cyl heads are the main engine harness grounds. You absolutely need them. Missing one or two may not prevent the car from running but it will do some wierd and hard to identify things

The stock cylinder head ground to chassis wire is just a braided wire that is flat, no insulation, goes from the pass head to the firewall just above and to the driver side of the heater box - any nice large (4 guage) wire willsuffice for this ground. The battery negative connects to the pass side head on the front, and the motor to chassis connects on the pass side head rear.

On your pics above, the thing on the front of the intake - what was called the two-wire coolant temp sender - My 1990 and my 1992 had a coolant sender on the driver head that fed the guage with a single wire, as well as this one on the top of the intake that fed the ECM.

The purpose of the heater diverter valve is to keep hot coolant water from circulating through the heater core inside the car (thus creating more heat in the cabin) UNLESS the heater switch is pushed to the warm position, then vacuum is sent to the diverter valve allowing the warm coolant to circulate through the heater core. Alot of us just bypass it as it's a quite an eyesore.

Breather pan is old school term for the air cleaner assembly - that sensor plugs into the bottom of it.

Pocket - you're either showing your age, or hanging out with too many old geezers like me

that's what I thought you meant but I don't have a spot in/on my air cleaner assembly for the sensor. I think the previous owner wasn't running it. how important is it to have the sensor

If the are black ones about 14 gauge, a couple on the back of both the driver side and pass side heads, they go into the wiring harness and you will need to reconnect them because they are grounds for the ecm and other components if I recall correctly.

It should be in the bottom of the housing, on the back side if I remember, near the distributor. You have a stock air cleaner housing, or an aftermarket? Does it look like the one in the pic below?

ok, today i have a new problem. the engine is 90% assembled and last night i cranked it over to check for valve movement. today when i turn the key i get nothing from the starter. what could it be?

the purple wire is on the right spot. i cranked the motor over with the starter before i put the valve covers on. now when i turn the key the water temp gauge goes all the way up. ideas?

Check the batt voltage. Did you leave the key or a light on over night and drain the batt? If that is good, did you get those grounds fixed up? Definitely the first place to start if your instrumentation is acting up.

With the water temp guage - there should be a coolant temp sensor on the driver side head between #1 and #3 plugs - that's the sensor that feeds the guage - should have a single wire connected to it (color I don't remember).

With the pics - those are all the fusible links - where each goes is hard to say, as they've surely been moved around in the block. I do se a large guage black wire there - although it's black it is supposed to be a positive wire right? Goes to your battery +? I just wanted to make sure you don't have such a large ground wire attached in that fusible link block (which I'm sure you don't - I just noticed it's black).

Your wiring digrams from the Haynes manual should show the fusible links and what each runs to. I want to say that one is for electric fans, one for the blower motor, one for the fuse block, one for the A/C, one for the alternator, one for the starter. But I'm not 100% sure.

the heavy black is a positive wire but the problem i am having is the starter won't engage. i just had it tested and everything is fine with it. the starter stopped working after i put the engine back together and the water temp gauge moves up all the way when i crank the ignition

Usually when a guage goes up all the way, it means it's not connected to it's sensor.

The wire for the temp gauge is a single green wire, he sensor is where camaronewbie stated. The purple comes over from the driver side of the firewall. One red goes from the starter to the fan power block by the battery. One red runs from the starter over to the alternator I believe there is an orange one that does go to the pass side somewhere. Dont recall one going to the A/C or blower motor though.

i replaced the wire and connector going to the sensor but i still have the same problem. just replaced the starter relay and its fine. still confused though

Make sure that your ground ( black cable ) is really the ground. To many hacks replace w/ red to - on battery do to length of cable.

the service engine soon light comes on the car turns over but doesn't run.

I found the problem a while ago,.. long story short the engine spun 2 bearings and the ignition control module went bad. The new motor only cost $200 bucks though
