Car making a knocking sound. (Newbie)
So the cam has been making a very weird noise when turning over lately meaning when you try to turn over it makes a knocking sound kinda if you tap a engine part with a wrench or something similar in that ball park.
I looked online to see if it was the starter, and the noises car made does not sound anything close, the car does not turn over like i see in most of the cars i seen it just makes the knocking sound everytime you turn it over. It does start though after a few key turns. It started about 4 months ago i did not think of it much since it only did it for about 2-3 turns then started up normally but lately it needs more to turn over.
What can it be? I will be taking a video of the noise tomorrow and checking to see if anything is loose or worn out.

Have a friend crank the engine while you use a rubber hose as a stethoscope.
Make sure you stay away from moving parts.
You can put the end of the hose on a stick so your hand won’t be anywhere near a moving part.
That will help locate the source of the knocking.

Is it just when you start it? Or is it the whole time the car is running? Is your check engine light on? If so you can buy an ALDL (assembly line diagnostic link) reader from wal-mart for $25, you plug it in under your dash and it gives you a code, and based on that code you can find out what's malfunctioning.
According to my repair manual, there's a few things that could cause a knocking sound.
- Ignition timing
- If it's carbureted then it (the carb) might need adjustment
- Improper spark plugs?
- Faulty emissions system
- Vacuum leak

could be a cracked flexplate or loose flexplate bolts
(A/T tranny) if flexplate is cracked, cause could be loose
bellhousing bolts or a worn bushing in the tranny where
the torque converter pump drive fits.
