Hi guys. I sanyone familiar with relays? I've searched up and down the internet for a way to install a relay for my car alarm. I want to program my alarm so that I can remotely pop my trunk. Seriously though. I found 3 ways to wire up relays but which way is the correct way (A, B, C)? Please help.

 

if your car already has an electric trunk popper, with the switch, then it already has a relay. you just need to tap into that line before the relay. if it's the 86 in your description, then i'm not sure if this is the exact same. on my 90 there's a relay and a switch in the center console, i tapped into the brown wire from the switch that goes into the relay, should be a negative output from the alarm.

ok so simply put... from the alarm just run the "auxillary output channel 2" or whatever option to the brown wire on the hatch release switch in the center console by the window switches.

that triggers the relay which pops the solenoid, so no need to add a relay.

 

Ok. But my 86 didnt have the electric solenoid. I came across a 87 IROC which was going to get junked. I bought the whole pull down motor assembly which has the electric solenoid bolted to it. So I tapped into the power feed for the electric pull down motor with a push button switch. It works great, but I would love to hook up the alarm trunk release. So there is no relay because my 86 didnt come with the power trunk release. Thanks for the help though Matt.

 

Chevy86, Matt pointed out your Alarm needs to have a Remote Trunk Release feature built into it. If that is so, install the donor Lock assembly and follow your Alarm Install instructions.
My Alarm has the Remote feature. It only pops the Trunk with the Alarm Disabled. Just FYI

 

ok then you'll need a relay, and those pics you showed all contradict each other. and according to my knowledge they're all wrong

showing a negative output from an alarm or remote keyless entry used to activate a trunk release solenoid that requires 12V+ to release the trunk.

 

The alarm does have the feature. (http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_...te+AL-600.html) The users manual doesn't show how to install a relay for the trunk. Thats why Im here, other wise I wouldnt be asking for help.

 

Alright, Thanks Matt. So what about pin 87a? Is it not used? No ground for the relay?

 

87a is used in rare occasions, but not for this guaranteed. i am pretty sure the relay pic i posted will work so yea, no ground

Be aware that your system may require an ADDITIONAL relay to use the power hatch relay, depending on how it's hooked up, as well. Your car probably already has the wiring, but some of it may not be installed. If you remove your upper console, you may see an extra connector under there for the hatch release switch, which looks similar to the window switches on your car. The release relay may already be under the dash (mine was, with no switch or wire running to the back), but it may be useless without the rest of the parts. The relay would be to the passenger's side of the center dash vents, tucked up behind the lip at the bottom of the dash, pretty much just hanging out.

 

Im going to get a relay later. My 86 was a baseline. It has no power accessories such as windows or trunk unlock. I got a general idea of how Im going to go about the wire. Thanks for the advice Maverick H1L. Your info would benefit others who have the power accesories if they stumble across your post.

 

Still won't hurt to look to see if you have the relay connector. Thing is, our wiring harnesses, for the most part, were designed to be universal, or a just-toss-it-in-the-car-and-move-on sort of thing. I'll tell you, when I got the switch panel and the solenoid for my release, I was QUITE surprised to find that not only did I have the connectors for the switch and relay, but I also had the relay already installed, waiting to be used. I thought that thing was the horn relay at first, but it wasn't.

 

Okay. I'll look for it. So what do I do? Can I just remove the upper dash board pad and look down through the windshield? I know that there is a relay under my dashboard passengerside but that relay is used for the power antenna.

 

I used a 775 relay from pepboys auto and wired that in and it works awsome on my 90

 

the hatch relay is in the center console. there's a wire on the parking brake or shifter wire that's tan/white. see if it goes to a relay under the console. i doubt it will. i'm not even sure if 86 had a power hatch release... could be wrong

 

I pulled a console from an 85 that had it... So, I'm sure it was an option on the 86.

OP, you won't see the relay looking down from the dash pad. Besides, the lower hush panel has fewer screws to remove, and it will be tucked right up under the lip at the lower edge (which is why you won't see it from the top). Unless it's in a different location on the Camaro, which I'm not sure about.

 

My 86 didnt have the power hatch release on the center console. But I'll take a peek when I open up the to install a B&M Shifter. Thanks Matt.

 

I messed up. I was half asleep when I typed this post. Yes I do have a relay under the lip of the passenger dashboard, but it is used as the power antenna relay. Im going to open up the center console and look around. Thanks Maverick H1L.

 

Not to "hijack" the thread but I am in the process of installing an alarm in my
90 gta and I am stuck in the same spot. I am guess from what I read here that the hatch release relay being in the center console area would be the
same for 1990.
I will check tomorrow. Will post results when I get them but thanks for the info.
Just curious as to why repair manuals say the relay is in the convenience center. I see what appears to be a relay there but is that the horn button
relay???

For my 86 IROC, under the passengerside dashboard, is the relay for the power antenna. I dont know what yours would be for.

 

im not sure why it says hatch relay is in the conv. center, but the horn relay might be... but i'd tap into the horn wire coming out of the wires that come down the steering column. it's a black wire, and the alarm should put out a low voltage negative, so you can tap into it before the relay where i just said and it'll be good.

 

Still have to check on the passenger's side under dash to see what that is but
I just bought a shop manual and it says that relay is for the power antenna.
I figure I will more than likely just tap into the switch wire. Problem with that
is I went to do that today and cut the black wire in half just to make sure that was the right one and after I cut it and hit the trunk switch, it still
openend.
Now I am even more confused than before. Which wire do I need to tap into?
The alarm says a black wire coming from the hatch relay (still looking for that).
At the hatch switch, there is a black wire, tan/white wire, and a brownish
colored wire, and a grey wire.
In the center console there is a big black thingy that might be a relay but
it has 4 wires coming from it (white, white/black, yellow, yellow/black).
I did see the tan/white wire connected where the parking brake is though.

90 GTA should have the relay tucked up inside the passenger's side of the dash. Follow the wire from the dash switch (your switch should be on the dash and not in the console, so why would they put one in the console?). My FSM isn't for a 90, but for a 92, and it says that the release relay is "Behind RH Side of I/P". Diagram looks like the relay pigtail should come out of the harness at the same point as the 15-wire connector C207.

:edit: If you find a relay under there, all you have to do is be touching it as you hit the release switch. If you can feel it click as it switches, it's the hatch relay. If not, you'll need to find another one. You'll need a relay as the switch is for the power side of the circuit and the alarm module will control the ground side of the relay coil. The antenna relay is behind the trim panel under the dash pad and above the hush panel.

 

Time, patience and determination pays off. I found my hatch relay.
In my 1990 gta (not sure if it's in the same location as other years or camaros), Right underneath the top panel under where the map pocket is.
Remove the lower trim panel (I think its 3 or 4 7mm screws). Then remove the
upper trim panel on the passenger side (also 3 or 4 7mm screws).
There is some kind of computer like module that has 2 7mm screws. After you
remove them, and gently pull the module out of the way, you are pretty much
looking straight at the relay. If it's like mine it will be wrapped in foam. If in
doubt, press the hatch release switch to see if it clicks. There will be 3 wires
coming from it: (orange, black and brown).
That's pretty much it.

Now that I found the relay, next question is did we get a "definitive" positive
from which relay wiring diagram to use???????
I am in the final wiring stage and I don't want to use the wrong one.
Anyone that has installed the auxiliary relay for a alarm remote trunk release

All 4 relay diagrams I see in this thread are doing the same thing. They are applying 12 volts to a hatch release or whatever you are hooking it to. It doesn't matter which of these you go by. You will accomplish the same thing.

 

This is the one I used for mine. The center pin is not used.
