Shifter Wiring

Was there a difference in wiring from my 89 camaro automatic shifter to a 70-72 camaro automatic shifter? Or could I just plug n go.

Re: Shifter Wiring

Alot Im guessing

3rd gen has two wires for the starter safety switch
Two wires for the back lights
Two wires for the P/Neutral switch to the ECM

No idea on the 2nd gen shifter

Why are you using it?

Re: Shifter Wiring

A 2nd Gen shifter would need another detent too.

He probably wants a shifter that works kind of like 1/2 of a Hurst Dual Gate; some 2nd Gen shifters had this feature. They won't skip ranges on the upshifts.

Re: Shifter Wiring

Its a project, I'm going to be installing a 70-72 camaro horseshoe shifter. And I noticed the wires and wanted to make sure they will plug right in. Also i'm going to make my own shift console plate.

Re: Shifter Wiring

If you're still looking for a stirrup shifter, you don't have to find a 70-72 Camaro shifter. GM started using them in 1968. I've also seen them in Buick Skylarks.

My friend has one in his '68 El Camino. It's hooked up to a 700R4. I can't recall if he mod'ed it to get the extra detent or if he just uses it without first gear.

Re: Shifter Wiring

I wanted the 70-72 because of the long base plate it has so i can bolt it to the body. the 68-69 had a small one. I found the adapters & cable for it to use everything.
