electric fan in a '83 TA?

I was thinking of installing an electric fan in my 83 TA and disconnecting the pulley fan. What are your tips for doing the switch over and recommendations on a fan (or dual fans.) And is it worth the hassle/expense for fuel or engine power.

Re: electric fan in a '83 TA?

I swapped to a single electric fan and serpentine setup in my old 83, and it made a noticeable difference. The engine would rev a little faster, and was much smoother. However, I'm not sure how much of it was from the fan, and how much was from the serpentine belt.

Where did you get your fan and how well does it work? I like the serpentine belt idea. Is that a difficult mod, where will I find instructions on that?

Anyone put in an electric fan? What kind? work well? Easy to do?

Re: electric fan in a '83 TA?

There are dozens of generic electric fan kits on the market and they come with instructions and are fairly easy to do. Keep your existing fan shroud and just take your blade off and find an electric one the right size. A junk yard car with a serpentine set up can be looted for conversion parts.

Re: electric fan in a '83 TA?

I got everything I needed from a junkyard donor car, and 89ish RS. Everything was a bolt-in install. The serpentine swap was also straightforward. I did have to get a different alternator, since the serpentine setup uses a different one. Also, I got the A/C lines from the donor car, since the alternator and A/C compressor swap sides. I had to lengthen the wires a little for the A/C compressor, and lengthen the alternator wiring, as well as solder on the correct pigtail for the new alternator. I think I also had to run a rubber fuel line from the pump to the carb too, I can't remember if it had a hard metal line to start with.

Re: electric fan in a '83 TA?

ok. I just did some quick research into the fans and there's quite a bit of info. I have a 305 v8 and may be putting in a 350 crate engine soon. What is the fan cfm rating I should be looking for to be sure I don't overheat? Should it be a dual fan? What about amp draw? What's a good number? Or how about a part number that you know will work from Jegs or some other co.?

Here's what I did, and I've experienced to difficulties with my 350/330 swap. As a matter of fact, the car runs cooler now than it did with the old 305.
