Its a slider and they break very easily with the 90-92 birds. Only fix is replacement
Some members have crafted various electric circuits to light up each position with the shifter, but its not a factory fix

Re: How do you fix shifter indicator in a TA?
Pocket, do you know if my car is supposed to have a slider? It has nothing now and I took it apart yesterday to add a blue LED and I noticed the screws holding it on to the console have springs. That made me suspicious of the setup. The part with the light is fully enclosed, so I don't know how an indicator would go in unless in rides on top of the setup rather than inside. Thanks for your help.

Not hard at all on my car. Lift up the center armrest, remove the two screws, lift up from the rear, unplug all the connectors, and pop it out. oh you remove the staple from the back of the shifter **** and remove the shifter ****. Of course mine doesn't have a shift indicator so I don't know what is involved there.

I havent seen any pre 90 shift plates with the slider. The springs are stock for any shift plate. Im not sure what they're there for because the screw is installed at full thread engagement
Plates with the slider have a slot cut in the white plastic numbers part facing the shifter. If you dont have the slot, you dont have a slider

Re: How do you fix shifter indicator in a TA?
With mine I have nothing indicating what gear im in. The letters are lit up when the lights are turned on but after taking the console apart to look if there is anything broken I found that it looks like there was never any mechanism to show what gear position the shifter is in.
My car is completly stock and does not apear to have been tinkered with so im wondering, Is it stock to have no shifter position indicator? Seems odd that would be the case, I would not be surprised.
Anyonw know?
