Why Does My Rear View Mirror Have Pretty Blue Lights In It?

Is that an auto-dimming mirror?

What is the object in the red outline?

If there’s electronics in the mirror an incorrect hookup can damage it.

Once you determine there are none (or none you care about) here’s how you can figure out what wires go where.

The black wire should be ground.

Now, grab a brake light bulb and throw it in a socket.

The brake light bulb will prevent wiring damage.

Using a 12 volt power supply, connect one lead of the brake light bulb socket to the
+ wire of the power supply.

The other lead of the brake light bulb socket is now a probe.

Twist ends of the black and the white mirror wires together.

Connect the
of the power supply to those wires.

Probe the gray and white/red wires one at a time while rocking the mirror switch.

The line which causes the map lights to remain on (probably the white/red wire) is the wire you need to connect to the orange wire now in your headliner.

If you get negative results experiment with wire combinations.

Tape the end of the wire that will remain unused.

The red outline is box is a soft light that is suspose to shine down on the heater control area. But it is so soft that it really does not work. It is constantly on so it's good for holding items up to it you are trying to see without on turning the lites.

Re: ighted Mirror wiring

My non lighted mirror fell off and I'd like to replace it with a lighted mirror. Any suggestions on which mirror to buy and especially the easiest way to wire it? I know nothing about wiring!

Mirror Driving

As which to buy, no brand suggestion but don’t skimp.

Make sure the mirror glass is flat perfect and the unit feels solidly constructed.

RE: Wiring; The wires for it might be your car because it costs GM less to make all the harnesses the same.

Whether they are there or not typically the
black wire from the mirror goes to ground, the White wire goes to the door pin switches, the orange wire goes to the hot wire.

This is correct, the early version of this mirror has a switch here just like the other side. It changed from 2 switches (1 each light) to 1 switch and one light sometime around 1990.
I'm Not 100% sure of the exact time of the change.
