Re: battery smoking and sparking

Something is on-- head lights, radio? Or touching where it's not supposed to. If you're sure every thing is off, DON'T keep messing with it!!

Negative is going to the alternator mount, against the block?

Good ground straps to firewall, body ,& chassis?
Pos going to alt, & starter?

Starter wires are in the correct locations?

Are either battery cables pinched off? Bare? Against exhaust & got melted so it's touching?

Take the starter & alternator to get tested. Some thing in 1 of these may be bad...IMHO...

Re: battery smoking and sparking

I'll get my Haynes manual out tomorrow & see if they show starter wire locations. Don't know when, but probly in mid noonish area. Thing about Haynes, they leave ALOT of important details out!!

Hopefuly, some one who knows where the wires go can post up!!

Take a look at the wire harness that plugs into the firewall--make sure no wires are melted // burned. Check the fusable links in the starter wires. If any melted, they did their job, & need replaced.

Also, look at the fuse box & do the same, & look for blown fuses.

If there is an odor of burned plastic, then something got too much voltage or amps.
How new is the battery? If it's under warranty, exchange it.

It is important that the starter is connected properly, or strange things will happen--
body ground wire that is too small will burn up, starter will run-on even with the key off, car won't turn off.

I can't recall, but I **BELIEVE** the 2 conections for the starter are---
the bigger lugs // eyelets go to the "BAT" of the starter, & the 2 or 3 (?)
others go to the " S " terminal. DON"T take that as a fact, I just don't recall!!
