Another Battery Question, I know... bear with me!

Ok, so I just got a digital multimeter yesterday to replace my aging but trusty analog multimeter. I guess I had the red lead in the unfused DC 10A plug in instead of the other positive lead plug in , which is where it was supposed to be. I was just going to take a reading of my battery volts and when I connected the multimeter my underhood light started dimming and I could tell power was draining. I immediately unhooked the multimeter and felt that the wire leads were hot to the touch. I used my analog meter and it showed that I had somewhere around 6-7 volts now in the battery where there was 10-11 before I tried to get the reading. I unhooked the battery and slowly but surely the batt amps started rising back up to around 10. What is weird is that when I reconnect the battery cables the battery drops down to the 6.5-7 volt mark.

Does this mean I screwed something up and now have a huge drain on the battery or do I have to charge the battery back up to where it was before I screwed up with the multimeter?

The other thing is that when I connected my battery charger to the battery with the cables installed in the car, I could hear the IAC functioning as if the pintle was adjusting itself. Should the IAC be doing this???

Plain Drain

You have a drain therefore should locate it before other troubleshooting.

Connect an ammeter in series with the battery.

With everything turned off and doors closed observe the current flow.

Pull the fuses one at a time till you see the current drop.

That’s the circuit with the problem.

Happy Racing!
