Mysterious smoke and window problems
Mysterious smoke and window problems
First off, thanks for having this forum. I just got an 88 IROC and your forum has been a great source of info.
My IROC is a restoration project. It sat in some guys driveway for ten years but it's in fairly good shape. The paint sucks, the electronics are wierd, but it runs great.
So when I got it a few weeks ago the passenger side window did not work but the driver side did. If I started the car with the window rolled down it would automatically roll up (annoying and usually unexpected). This morning some smoke came out of the center console and now neither window works. When I pressed the key "up" the battery registers a slight draw, but nothing on down. Pulling open the console I found a pair of relays that each have a small burned looking patch on the back and i suspect that these are the culprits.
My question is this, what killed them in the first place? Was it being 22 years old? or sitting for 10 years? Or could it have to do with the custom wiring to the remote starter and crazy stereo the previous owner put in? I'm pretty new to this stuff so any input would be helpful.

a loose connection will fry quickly, maybe mice, moisture. You lucky it didnt start a fire.
if the PO hacked up the wiring, that could be an issue too, but i dont think that would effect the windows

You should remove the PO installed relays and restore the circuit to this configuration.
