Car wont Start, but theres power at the starter?

hey guys, i just bought a 1987 camaro, drove it about 5km and it died, i was pissed. anyways, the tow truck driver from CAA told me that its an ignition switch he got under, and there was power at the starter, so the problem is between the ignition and the starter, what would you suggest, lights worked, dome light did, no radio, no power windows, no power hatch.. ignition switch? your guys opinions would be great on what the problem is, if you need more detail on waht happened give me a message! thanks alot for your help, all help is appreciated!

Check the neutral switch to make sure it’s closed.

Check for signal at the solenoid (purple wire) while attempting to crank. Then work your way back to the ign switch. Be sure to check power to the ign sw. You may have a blown fuse link.

Power to the ign sw is the two large red wires. Pins 2 & 3. They take power from a fuse link at the batt term of the starter.

Re: Car wont Start, but theres power at the starter?

there is no crank at all, the engine wont even turn over, but it did spin when we f***** with the starter, which leads me to beleive that its coming from the ignition, although the two ignition fuses were missing, but the car did start? there was also a noise which sounded like something was bouncing around once i hit 40+km, could one fuse have fallen out then the other one finally fell out and that was it?. aswell where does the purple wire go to? the whole route, it would be nice to have a diagram but i cant find one.. lol. like there is no crank from the engine at all, i turn the key and nothing. dead. battery is new, but the headlights work, the dome light, and thats it, radio is dead, power windows and locks, and the power hatch is all dead.

sounded like a front end bouncing, like some bolt was loose or something and finally gave maybe, not too sure what happened, but the sound definatly sounded like something was bouncing around or was loose.

No VATS in your car, so it's either Neutral Safety Switch (in center console - $30 at NAPA, or it's the Starter Enable Relay (under driver kick panel, under the black goo that covers the hole near the hood release - $10 at NAPA). Try the Starter Enable Relay 1st - it's cheaper and slightly easier.

If it helps, your local library will have either All Data or Mitchell On Demand available on their computers. These tech info services will have all your vehicle's wiring diagrams. I have Mitchell at work. Thats where I looked up your ign sw power feeds. The purple wire runs from the starter sol. to the neutral safety sw. The wire from the ns sw to the ign sw is yellow.

Re: Car wont Start, but theres power at the starter?

BTW, you dont say whether your car is man or auto trans. Makes a difference in the location of the ns sw. Auto is in console as camaronewbie stated, man is above clutch pedal. Camaronewbie mentioned a starter enable relay but I dont think the 87/non VATS car uses that. Anyway, trace power back to the ns sw, then to the ign sw. You may save time by going straight to the ign sw, big yellow wire. Then, before replacing any parts, check power at the two big red wires I mentioned before. Ive seen alot of blown fuse links on GM.
