Alternator

1989 Camaro 5.7 IROC.

Switch on the ignition and the Alternator makes a whirring noise, sounds and feels like it's trying to turn?? The unit still charges OK.
Unplug it and the noise stops. Anyone know if this is normal, if not, what the problem could be.

Alternative Decision

Most likely one of the internal diodes has shorted.

Unless you want to open it, locate the bad diode and replace it, replace the alternator.

Happy Racing!
