how can i start my firebird with out a key

I recently purchased a 91 firebird from a tow yard, it was a stolen recovery so there is no key and the steering coloum is torn up. I just want to know if the motor runs good or not. Thank You

bypass vats, switch the ignition to on by pushing the rod that is normally attached to the lock cylinder and push it down.

how do you bypass the vats key I was going to with a reostat to reach the correct resistance but is there a easier way

rheostat is the easiest/cheapest way but there are 15-16 values and there will be a 5-10 minute delay per try, maybe longer.

other way is a memcal with VATS turned off. the memcal is the module that is plugged into the ECM.

here is a list of resistance values,

You can go to a shop that does remote starter and such. They will have a pack of restistors called a VATS PACK. It will have all 15 different restistors you would to bypass the vats key. If you don't know of a shop around, you can order it online just seach for VATS PACK

It's on the back of the passengers side dash.

I found a few boxes behind the dash but nothing that matches the wiring colors

It's a black plastic box bolted to the back of the dash hull, up behind the dash. The only time I've ever seen one was after I pulled the entire dash. You probably can't see it or get at it with the dash still in the car.

Theoretically, you can bypass VATS by grounding the starter enable relay, and the VATS enable wire from the ECM, since that's all the VATS box does when the correct resistence key is used. However that's just a theory.

Re: how can i start my firebird with out a key

You don't have to reach the box. You just need to reach the 2 wires from it, that go into the steering column.

See post #6..... https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/elec...stor-help.html

But without the key, there is no way to determine what resistor value it is looking for. Normally you test the key to determine which of the 15 resistors you need. Without the key, you'll hafta get all 15 & test 1 by 1.

Re: how can i start my firebird with out a key

Last night i tried my luck at bypassing the vats. I didn't get very far.... When I turn the key on is anything supposed to come on because nothing would turn on. Is there a main fuse anywhere before the fuse pannel? Tonight Im going to get in there with a test light to see if Im getting power to any thing or not.
