Wiring up Wiper Motor. Need some help

Alrighty, I recently bought an 83 Camaro Sport V6. The guy who had it before me did a number on the wiring including installing a completely different wiper switch in the dash. I'm trying to rewire the motor so I can use the orginal lever on the left side of the steering wheel.

So here it is. I have a diagrahm from the repair manual but unfortunately it doesn't tell me which wire goes where on the actual motor. Here is a picture of the motor:

Size: 144.5 KB

Now, the switch has 5 colors, White, Grey, Purple, Dark Green and Pink. White is power from the fuse box to the switch which is my understanding.

Where do these wire colors go on the motor? Where is it grounded?

Any help would be much appreciated!!!! Thanks in advanced.

Re: Wiring up Wiper Motor. Need some help

In the right front of your photo, the three terminals, from top to bottom, are numbered 1, 2, 3. The two terminals at the top left to from back to front, are numbered 4 and 5. There should be another terminal, 6, located below and just to the left of terminal 4.

The Purple wire goes to #1
The white wire goes to #2, from the terminal below
The Gray wire goes to #3
The pink wire goes to #4 on my 82 (it goes to #5 in the wiring diagram)
The white were goes goes to #5 on my 82 (it goes to #4 in the wiring diagram. This white wire comes from the fuse and the jumpers to #2 above.
The dark green wire goes to #6, via a single position connector.

In the connector to #1, #2 and #3 there is a diode from the white wire to the purple wire. The arrow, line or ring around on end of the diode goes to the white wire, and the other end goes to the purple wire.

The wiper motor assembly is grounded when you bolt it to the firewall.

Hope this gets you going again.

Re: Wiring up Wiper Motor. Need some help

Alrighty, I wired it up as you described. However, I don't have a 6th terminal. It didn't work. So, I tried wiring Grey to #1, White to #2, Green to #3, Pink to #4, and the White from #1 to #5. What ends up happening now is the wipers work on every setting, but, the it also mists the wiper cleaner on every setting....

Is this due to the fact that I don't have a 6th terminal and it's the wrong motor? Or, is there something I can do to the wiring now that will alow me to only mist on the mist setting.

Thanks again for all the help so far.

Re: Wiring up Wiper Motor. Need some help

I think you have the incorrect wiper unit. Where did it come from? Also, when you connected the wires to the wiper, did you include the diode between terminals 1 and 2?

In general this system works as follows. The white wire provided the +12VDC to the Park Relay and the washer pump relays. When the system is activated, the Park Relay picks up and provides +12VDC to the pulse relay coil, the pulse timing circuit, and the wiper motor. When you operate any of the switches on the lever, that switch grounds the circuit and completes the various circuits for the wiper to operate.

The wire signals are:

White +12 VDC connects to terminals 2, 4, also has a diode to terminal 1
Purple: Park Relay, terminal 1 and diode to terminal 2
Gray: Wiper Motor, terminal 3
White: +12 VDC to terminal 5, +12VDC to washer pump relay
Pink: Washer Pump relay, negative side, terminal 5
Dark Green: Delay Timer, terminal 6

You can buy a replacement washer relay assembly. They are listed on www.acdelco.com as part number 8-6713. However you have to find a dealer near you to actually purchase if from. I am attaching a picture of it for your reference.

Another option is to look for a 1980-1981 wiper assembly with the intermittent delay feature. You might find one from a vendor that sell 2nd gen Carmaro parts.

www.rockauto.com has the ACDelco part for abut $50. They also have an A-1 CARDONE Part # 401681 Reman.: A-1 CARDONE Wiper Motor w/Washer Pump w/Delay; Complete with pulse relay and timing switch.; Front for $89.00 This looks like a complete assembly for your 1983 Camaro.

Hope this give you a few ideas on how to get everything working.
