What is causing fan relay to burn out?
I replaced my fan relay maybe 3 months ago. I have my fan rigged so it stays on with a toggle switch, so I leave it on most of the time. I noticed it didn't come on again. I wiggled the relay located on the fire wall, and it started to work again, but I feel like it's gonna fly south again. Any input would be appreciated.

here are some ideas,
fan drawing too much power for the relay
relay is not weather sealed
engine bay heat damaging the relay

I notice the recepticle the relay plugs into looked heat damaged. When I installed the new one, I did not weather seal it. How would I go about doing this?

Weather Or Not We Should Fix It
Weather is not supposed to be getting in that area.
If weather is, you need to fix that problem due to the fact weather might cause other problems on top of the relay problem.
However you can apply marine sealant between the relay and socket.

It just sits on the fire wall. I'm sure driving it through the rain is gonna get some moisture on it but not by anything wrong.

I replaced the relay plug, and it was working for a time, and the relay burned out again. I did some asking around, and I was told the fan motor is probably the culprit.

Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
How would I know if the ground is bad, or the motor is bad? I am very close to buying a fan and motor.
Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
Check the ground point for corrosion and/or do a continuity test from the ground leg of the fan connector to a good ground. High resistance means bad ground

Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
I just see two wires coming off the fan, and they go into the wiring harness
Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
One is black with a red stripe. This is 12v from the relay
Other is solid black, ground, test this one
While you're at it test the blk/red wire too from the connector to the relay socket to rule out a short
If both check out under 2 ohms, the relay and/or fan is bad

Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
After cleaning off the wires, I found the red/black /black wires. I'll check the ground wire at the leg I assume this means right at the motor. and ground it to the car.
A foot note to this discussion... When I changed the socket, I noticed the green wire was tampered with. I'm thinking the previous owner grounded the temp sensor to have the fan constantly running. I did the same thing last year, only down the wire from this. I have a toggle switch connected to it, and I've been running the fan all the time so it didn't heat up to 225. Maybe the fan motor has been working too hard.

Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
I just don't wanna see my engine heat up past 180. Heat causes friction, and wear.
Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
When you're moving above say 20mph, the fan is no longer required to keep the engine cool. Enough air flows through it
Ive had to drive around town with a dead fan before, its nerve racking, but doable

Re: What is causing fan relay to burn out?
Yeah the air dam starts when your moving, but I noticed the temp gauge was warmer than when I had the fan on also. Summer at 25-30 it looked like it was at about 195 degrees. So that's why I left the fan on. W/ fan on it cooled to 180. I'm gonna check to see if the fan needs to be replaced, and go from there.

I checked both wires, and they are well under 2 olms. Must be the fan motor.

The Camaro I am working with is a 92. I am assuming it is the newer style.
