Headlights will not come up..I've tried everything
Car: 1991 Firebird 305TBI
I searched and read just about every headlight problem thread on this forum and tried everything. My headlights worked fine until I wrecked the car last year. I have a 1992 V6 Firebird donor parts car that I have been piecing my car back together with. The headlights work fine on it, so I swapped out the headlight module and that did nothing. I then swapped out the headlight switch and still no cure. I have a circuit tester and I am not getting any power to the plug that you plug the motor into. The V6 car has power and I even put the module off my car and the switch off my car and they worked fine on it.
Tell me there is something that I am forgetting. Is there a relay or fuse that I am overlooking.
Thanks

Missing Link I Think
Using your tester, find out if you have power on the red wire going to the headlight switch.
If you don’t, check the fusible link near the battery.

Re: Missing Link I Think
Thank you for the advice. I just tried that and I have power there. I just do not have any power to the end of the plugs. I know the motors are good because I tried them on the other car I have. Just frustrated because I know there is something that I am missing. The headlights worked fine before the wreck.

Missing Link I Think
Put the light switch to the ON position.
Make sure you have power on the yellow wire, brown wire, and orange wires going to the module.
Make sure the black wire is grounded.

Re: Missing Link I Think
yellow, orange, brown, black, orange is how the bigger plug on the module goes. I have power to the yellow and brown only. Going to look into this a little further. This has to be the problem. Is there a fusible link somewhere on the orange wires?
Thanks a ton for your help!!

Re: Missing Link I Think
I did the same test on my 1992 donor car and I had power to the yellow and both orange wires. No power to brown. The headlights work just fine on the car. I'm confused to why the brown has no power in the car that is working and power in the car that isn't.

First look in the fuse block if they’re there they are labeled HDLP DR1 and HDLP DR2.

Re: Missing Link I Think
Still no luck...I look at the wiring diagram and it looks like the two orange wires going to the module have 15 amp fuses or fusible links as you mentioned. Where are these?? I have no power to those wires..that has to be the issue.

Re: Missing Link I Think
I jus finished wrestling with my headlights.. although on an 86. Your fusible links are actually very likely your problem. Force from your accident might have jarred something causing them to blow. If your not getting power at one of your headlight motors, this is usually why.

Re: Missing Link I Think
Unfortunately, my car is an 86.. therefore has a different wiring setup. Your best bet would be to consult a haynes book and look at the wiring diagrams there or wait for someone with your wiring setup to respond. Good luck

inside the motor there are Three 1/2 OD .440 length Nylon bushings.. you will need to order or make them they disintegrate into powder!!!
these motors are pretty tough to re-assemble if you have never taken one apart..
the two screws usually break!! I tap & replace with 1/4 stainless screws

Re: Headlights will not come up..I've tried everything
Thanks

I remember something about a "taped up" diode in the headlight wiring harness underneath the dash, check to see if you have this first of all, and if you do, check it for proper operation!!
I recall this diode has something to do with the headlight door operation!!

Re: Missing Link I Think
I have looked everywhere around the headlight module and cannot find a fusible link, maybe I am just blind!.....As far as the headlight switch goes, the plug that the switch goes into does have a connect area that looks smoked. I thought I solved the problem really quick when I found it, however it still had power to that area, so I eliminated that as the culprit.

I want to thank everyone for your help, all of the suggestions I am getting are great. I just wish I could find the problem. It is so bizarre that they worked just fine before the wreck and then boom, no power to the headlight door plugs. I'll keep trying though.

Hello 02SLPTransAm!!
If you have A/C, check the connection at the compressor, it has a taped up diode also!!
This is what you would be looking for, under the dash, sorry no picture, as I have Camaros, and they don't have pop up headlights...........as you know, so I can't show you!!

Re: Headlights will not come up..I've tried everything
Does any have a wiring diagram that will show where each of wires in the 5wire plug go? I am getting a significant battery drain that seems to come from Terminal B.

Re: Headlights will not come up..I've tried everything
Here is a picture of the fuses for both headlamps. I just fixed mine today. I had the same symptom as you, so I followed the wires from the control module to here and found 1 of them blown. Next is to find out why my gauge cluster doesn't illuminate when I turn the headlamps on. Security light, e-brake light and such work though.

Charcoalbird you are an absolute savior! I pulled both fuses and they are blown. I didn't get a chance to put another set in their place to check if it fixed it, but I can almost guarantee that it will. Thanks so much!!

Re: Headlights will not come up..I've tried everything
. I have had this problem for months now and searched the boards countless times only coming up with the pre-91' diagrams and pictures. If only there was a search function to find certain parts(or fuses in this case, and is year specific) with color photos like i've provided. That would make things so much easier.
