Starter wires

I wanna put a switch in my ash tray that has to be in the 'on" position to allow the car to start. I need to know which wire leads from the ignition to the starter; so i can reroute it to a swich in my ash tray.

does it have to be from the (ignition to the starter) or would it be best (from the battary to the starter)? i just wanna make it diffacult to steal my carro.

Re: Starter wires

Since you have an automatic, and the plan is to put the switch in the ashtray, the easiest would be to tap into the neutral safety switch.

If you take the console top off, you'll see a flat gadget on the pass side of your shifter with about 6 wires connecting into the front of it. 2 wires will be large, one dark green, one purple. The dark green is 12v coming in to the NSS, the purple is 12v coming out to the starter. You could cut into either, and put the switch inline - so that the 12v is not connecting unless the switch is in the right position.

But, here is the 'order' of traveling electricity for your car, in case you want to do something different...

1) You turn key to start, this actuates a rod that turns on the ignition switch (located on top of the steering column, driver side of column, just above where the two bolts attach the column support).

2) Ignition switch sends 12v out on a yellow wire to the starter enable relay to activate the relay, located in the driver side kick panel ususally behind the black goo that covers the hole for the hood release

3) At the same time, since you have a VATS car, the pellet in the key makes contact, sends the right resistance value to the VATS module, and the VATS module sends a ground signal to the starter enable relay on a black wire

4) Now that the starter enable relay has a power source (yellow wire) and a ground (black VATS wire) it energizes, making a connection between a red wire coming from fuse block to the dark green wire going to the neutral safety switch, sending this 12v to the NSS

5) IF the car is in N or P, the NSS reroutes the 12v from the dark green wire to the purple wire.

6) The purple wire runs out through the driver side wiring harness (C100 connector) to the starter

Good luck!

{NOTE - this is for a VATS car with an automatic - basically same applies for a manual car, but the NSS is located above the clutch pedal. ALSO, this is for a VATS car - non-VATS cars do not have the starter enable relay, the ignition switch sends 12v out to the NSS directly}

Re: Starter wires

You have a bird - different ashtray than the Camaro - but if you lik the idea of hidden ashtray switches, you can see mine in my 'Maro here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/fabr...-but-best.html
