Question about check engine light and insterment cluster
Hi all, just got a 92 camaro rs v6, I have 2 question that I could not find answer to, 1 - am i suppose to see a check engine light when I first turn on the car, on my other cars I've had the light would come on for a few seconds and go off. All that comes on is the "security" light, and the seat belt light. The other question I have is the speedometer and fuel gauges don't work, all the other gauges work, just those 2. Now i did a search and just couldn't find a good answer. Doing some detective work, I pulled the cluster and noticed the connections on the plastic printed overlay on the back on the left side do not seems to be making a good connection with the pigtail connector , the right hand side seems to be good contact. My question is can I bypass the flat plastic connection and just run jumper wires from the pig tail to the components that run off the left side connector ? I know the fuel gauge can work because if I wiggle the cluster I can get it to read but can't keep it in the right spot to keep it on. thanks for the help.

May be an emissions issue on the car, making the SES light, and thus a PO removed the bulb.

Also, for faster servicing in the future, instead of soldering jumpers, you can coat the worn connections with solder OR add a connector pair in series with wire jumpers.

Re: Question about check engine light and insterment cluster
If the car runs and drives without a problem you can assume the ECM is working 'OK'. Remove the cluster to be sure the CH light is not blown out.
You could use a very small screwdriver to "open" the terminals on the dash plugs a little bit. Most of the time that's all that's needed to correct a bad connection at that spot. Be sure that the fuel gauge wires show voltage by probing them with a voltmeter and turning the key. You could probably check the Speedo wires too by jacking up the back-end and probing the wires with the wheels turning. ( put in NEUTRAL and spin by hand ) Proper Diagnosis is Important !!
My bet is that the problems are in the cluster or it's parts. As they age they are very prone to failure. A replacement cluster is cheap enough and quick enough way to try and correct the problem. ( Before soldering to your harness ! )

Re: Question about check engine light and insterment cluster
Thanks John, I think I might just go the replacement cluster route, I did some old school cleaning of the cluster leads, using an eraser like on the old slot cars to remove build up on the contacts, but it wasn't enough. Does anyone know or have a diagram of the pinouts of the to harnesses , I have been working with electronics scene the days of the old radio shack model 1 computers so I know my way around that stuff just would really help to know the pinouts. Is it worth getting a cluster from the junk yard and if so how much should I be willing to pay for one ?

Re: Question about check engine light and insterment cluster
Hey all I had afew minutes to do some more csi work on my dash cluster and this is what I found for information written on it, ---- cluster - 90 chevy FEA ---- ----- 25089823 ---- ---- 42/777 ----- Those are the markings on the back of the cluster. Now I have a 92 RS V6 is it possible that someone put a 90's cluster and maybe that is why it is not working right on the speedo and fuel gauge ?

Re: Question about check engine light and insterment cluster
A 1990 cluster should work without any problems in a 90-91-92 car.
Clusters vary widly in price from seller to seller. Most have not been tested or verified in any way before they are sold. People selling a known good cluster often ask more for obvious reasons......
Be sure you install a V6 replacement cluster, a V8 cluster can be installed - but the tachometer reading will be way off !

I did a cluster change from an 80mph speedo to a 120 mph speedo on my 87 bird, I ran into the tach being inaccurate, all I did was swap the back plate, and for further clarification, the insert that has the RPM reading 1,2,3,4,5...
... you might be able to do the same as well... just make sure you verify with equipment that reads the RPM... I used my timing light.. Thread
