Troubleshooting horn

Need a push in the right direction,
89 Iroc-Z ,working at getting horn fuctioning, only have my F-note horn wirings there for both, F-note works straight off battery with a fuzed test lead. New horn relay , fuze is good, new pigtail and Have a good Stock Iroc Horn button I know works, everything put together right as near I can tell with the exception of the missing A-Note I havent bought yet .When you press the horn button it wont blow. Now I just dont know where to ground and test with my volt Ohm meter to start troubleshooting, where to look for DC voltage, or to test for continuity. Also I dunno if my steering wheel is put together right I didnt need a puller to remove it the large nut was finger tight when I got the car. Ive tightened it somewhat with a ratchet but I wonder if it should be compressed more and thats why the horn doesnt work because the ground isnt bonded somehow. Sorry thats a bit storied or if it sounds strange.. Any help appreciated.

Re: Troubleshooting horn

The horn system is really simple... There's there horn button (switch), the wire to the relay, relay, the wire to the horns, and the horns themselves. My first stupid question is do you have the short wire from the horn button to the turn signal cancel cam?

What you need to do is find the open in the system. I'd probably start at the horn relay and check from the relay to the horns, and from the relay back to the horn button (switch). That will give you a direction to go. If your steering column has been apart, it could be assembled wrong. The circuit passes through the cancel cam to the turn signal switch, and on down the column. I'll up some pics for you in a minute, I had to recharge batteries...

Re: Troubleshooting horn

Thanks Drew,

Well usin' your pic I just did a divide and conquer. Used the continuity test on my ohm meter pulled horn relay went from the green wire there, to one of the horn wires got tone.

Then I tested the black wire at the horn relay to the little white plastic housing the horn pigtail plugs into, I wrapped a little piece of electronics solder around my probe to make it longer cause it werent long enough ; had good tone there.

Then I flipped my meter to vDc set the range to 40 and since my radios pulled and I had just put the damn stock radio pigtails back in the car I grounded to its black wire and then checked for voltage at the orange horn relay wire, ...,12 vDc bigger than s@%.

Ok so wadda faaaaaaaaaaaa....horn should work .Double checked horn button and pigtail they are good.I put the relay back in take a test lead stick it in the pigtail plug then to the giant nut that holds the wheel on...........

Hooooooooonk....

Low and behold pigtail wasnt goin deep enough clean that little plug out ...no dice so i took and put about a pin heads worth of soulder on the little bell fitting on the end of the pigtail and reassembled.

All is workin fine. MY ROWZ GOTTA HORN!

I wonder if my steerin wheels not compressed enough
Thanks again for your help.

Re: Troubleshooting horn

Wonder if the spring on the pigtail might be weak... There is a spring between the brass thimble and the plastic tube isn't there?

Re: Troubleshooting horn

I just replaced my entire steering colomn and now when i connect the battery the horn is on continueously. I could have gotten a couple wires crossed seeing as how some are the same color. If anyone has Pics/Diagrams of the circuit or ANY ideas on how to fix this, please PM me. I need this car for work as soon as possible! -Matt
(I know i could just take the relay out, but i use my horn often to cure my road rage problems . . .)

Thanks

Re: Troubleshooting horn

Also have round horn cap in great shape for 89 Iroc but as soon as I attach to steering wheel the horn goes off. Very first project car and not familar with pieces for horn button. Should something like what's in this picture be fitted between cap and steering wheel?

Re: Troubleshooting horn

Thanks for this post, I'm troubleshooting my horn right now and this will come in handy I am sure, so far ruled out that my problems are not the horn (hooked positive wire to horns direct and they blow) or relay, although where the relay was supposed to be in the convenience center there was nothing so I put a new one in but apparently that is not the problem since it still doesn't work. I think I read the horn uses CTSY fuse in fuse block and that looks fine. I remember fixing the tilt steering a long time ago so I am assuming I probably just didn't hook something back up right in there (wire from horn pad to turn signal cam is connected fine btw, tried touching that wire direct to center nut that is grounded and nada), so only thing I can think of is something wrong with the little disk thing that makes contact with signal cam in the steering column.
