What are these cables?
My car was getting no spark so I checked all the connections and I found some two wires taped on to some grey plastic connection that weren't touching properly. I reconnected them and I got spark again.
It looks like those two wires, or at least one of them since I only traced one, goes to the Distributor cap. Both wires are red, the black one on the pic is just a black wire taped on to a red one.
Also on the second pic, the red wire is taped on to another wire that connects to the distributor cap. Is there a name fore those wires that connect to the Distributor cap and to the grey connection?
To me it seems that those two should connect from the distributor cap to the grey connection and snap on to it.
Another thing, on the distributor cap, is that the ignition module on the top of it? ( 3rd pic)

Re: What are these cables?
Alright, after looking at connectors on rockauto, I found out what the grey connector is. It's the ignition coil connector. This fits the no spark I had.
Where is the ignition coil, is it the thing on the top of the distributor? or is it at the end of the ignition coil connector? I tried following the ignition coil connector wires, but they go into the black wire cover
Also what should be connected to the ignition coil, I want to buy the connections to it that would snap on
If anyone needs the info on it heres the part number ACDELCO Part # PT2302

Re: What are these cables?
Your vehicle, or at least your wiring harness, was built for an external coil HEI distributor. The gray connector would go to the external coil. Someone has done a poor job of swapping over to internal coil HEI. The coil is in the top of the cap. Thats why its so large. If you want to properly connect the new dist, You can either use an insulated female blade connector. Or find the OE style single wire connector that locks into the cap. Attach the connector you choose to the pink wire.

That's what I want to do, I was just wondering if there was a specific name for it. And yeah, who ever put those wires did a horrible job, but that bad job cut the price of my car in half
since it wasn't running
Do you know where the connector goes to, besides the external coil. I couldn't follow it all the way unless I took of the wire cover

Yeah, I spaced the white wire. Youll want to put an insulated blade connector on it too and connect it to the "TACH" terminal at the cap, right next to the "BATT" terminal where the pink wire connects. Again, if you want it to be really sani, you can find the locking OE style connectors.

Hey pocket, Do you know where I can find the correct wires for it? or atleast better wires, the ones that are on right now don't work. A slight movement and they become disconnected
Re: What are these cables?
Jegs, Summit, Pico, etc... Accel sells a plug with both the power and tach wires. Or you can get the stock style plugs. Google 5664pt and 5663pt, (Pico part numbers) and click the shopping tab.

Re: What are these cables?
better idea, get an exteral coil and non in-cap HEI dizzy from a bone yard
Re: What are these cables?
Since someone did away with the computer controlled distributor and installed a vacuum advance unit, I'd be willing to bet the car is carbed now... In which case the distributor that came stock in the car wouldn't work anyway.

Re: What are these cables?
Thats correct. Theres no way a computer controlled carb or EFI could work with that dist. It must be carbed and no EST dist will work on it.

Re: What are these cables?
yeah its carbed. I got another problem though, I drove the car around the block and after I got back, smoke was coming from the side of the engine (passenger side). It looks like an exhaust leak, but it was alot of smoke and it kept going after the car was off. I guess this will be for another thread though

Oil leak perhaps? Look for oil coming from your pass side valve cover gasket or rear intake manifold end seal.

Man I feel your pain. I don't even want to know my cars history. All I know is some f*ckin hack had his hands on it that shouldn't have. Almost every under hood connector is disconnected.
If I were you I'd get a Haynes AND Chiltons manual and look at the wiring diagrams. Then just hope your wiring is still the same color. If you have AllData access thats even better, but few do....

That's how mine is. It has a 350 in it and who ever did the swap didn't remove the wires that weren't needed after the swap, there connecters all over the place on mine too
