Starter problem

When I start my car I usually just get a click from the starter on the first try and the second try it starts. Now it clicks 3,4 or more times before it starts. I checked the connections and the solenoid and they all apperar clean and tight. The previous owner replaced the starter before I bought it , so I don't think it's that old. Any ideas? Shimming? bad battery cable? bad starter or solenoid.
Thanks,Tim

Re: Starter problem

if it clicks, the solenoid is good, you have a cheap replacement starter thats going bad.
get a good one, that means not from advance, autozone, pepboys, orilleys.
best one is to get it from a starter and alternator shop thats reputable.

Re: Starter problem

same problem in my 88 iroc 350 tpi!
sometimes it cranks first try, sometimes at the second, sometimes after 4 or 5.
when it doesn't crank i hear just a click from the engine bay: one when i turn the key and one when it comes back in the on position; as stated before, is this the solenoid doing its job?
also tried to hit the starter with a rod but nothing changed: it cranks randomly every time.

is it the starter in my case too?
is there anything else to check before getting a new one?

thanks

Hearing the solenoid *·CLICK·* but the starter not turning is consistent with a bad starter however you could connect a voltmeter to the starter to make sure it’s not a voltage drop causing the problem.

Happy Racing!
