89 iroc 350tpi.I bought this car 3 months ago and get a little time to look at it now and then. The tanny needs a rebuild so it aint going far.But I go out and start it to keep the mice out and the fluids moving.Mice had there fun with the previous owner.I'm still finding cut wires from them.Somtimes I go out to start it and the dome light wont even come on.I will hook the bat. charger up and it starts charging then acts like I unhooked it.and start over.then all of a sudden it runs up to 75% charge, lights work great and all.Battery conection seams OK.would a short in the system recover that fast,or do I need to try harder on the bat. cables or some other conection?

Mice Not Nice
Sounds like those meece dined on delicious insulation causing a short or two.
Sometimes the under-hood or hatch light does not go out so check those easy ones first.
Then connect an ammeter in series with the battery.
If there is more than 50 milliamps there is excessive draw.
(You can use a small bulb such as a side marker bulb if you don’t have an ammeter.)
Disconnect the alternator wires to see if IT’S the problem.
With everything turned off and doors closed observe the current flow.
Pull the fuses one at a time, including the pump fuse near the battery, till you see the current drop.
That’s the circuit with the problem.

NINA,I'm a carpenter with a camaro,my last one was a 70 rs.Alot has changed,When you say connect the ammeter in series with the battery,Do you mean disconect the poa. battery cable and put one pole to the bat.and one to the cable.Or is there somthing else your saying in these words that my limited abillity can comprehend.can I take the fuse out and test in the fuse box.Can the altnator have a short inside it that would cause a slow drain on the bat.Guess I need to take the bat out charge it up and get it tested.I just don't like them auto parts stores, they don't know any more than i do.

OK, I got this sperry DM-210A out of the drawer.Black test line is in the center hole called com.the red test line is in the right side hole says max 600v,dc/ac cat II.I turner the selector to 200 V with squigly line over the V.With the pos. battery cable unhooked I put the red to the battery post and black to the battery cable. It had a reading of 11.5. I left the battery cable unhooked. there are 10 neighbor cats all around here and I have sean no sign of mice. the dammage was done before I got it.How come the battery has only gone down 2 times in 8 weeks and now it will go down right away.well what do my readings mean?I'm dumber than the mouse!
