Electronic Oops.

Ok Boy-yos I'm in a bit of a pickle, I bought my 89 Godbird for 500 dollars and shes I've been slowly putting money in. Was from a friend who is in the military. Car ran, rolled, bumped, attracted ladies. Minus the few problems like code 42-43 popping giving me all kinds of hell, (need a new ign. module as it seems) I was quite impressed with the car. and for 500 for a car in as good of shape as it was anyone who complained should be shot ;D.

...back to topic; I was driving home from work and I turned a corner and then poof my radio is gone. I was like...um okay so after a few days of silent awkward driving, I decided to inspect, much to my dismay I never noticed that the dome lights did not work either, and then recently I noticed the horn did not work...nor do my power-locks OR mirrors T_T SOO I whipped out ye ole manual and found the fuse...and said..."Alas poor 15 amp, I knew thy well" gazed upon the unsullied fuse and then silently plugged it in and shortly after I BELIEVE I threw the nearest object in a fit of blood lust to this problem.

Now if you care not read the tale in short:
-radio, Pwr Locks, Pwr Mirror, Horn, Int lights, do not work AND fuse is intact.

I did a bit of investigation to the radio (aftermarket kenwood) and noticed that the wiring was kinda shitastic, so after I tinkered with the wires and got nowhere I found that there was a peculiar wire leading out to the hood. as I followed It suddenly stopped...now I BELIEVE that this was a negative wiresince there is electrical tape leading towards the battery and appears to be a missing segment of wire.

Any ideas?

Re: Electronic Oops.

Most likely not a ground. It was probably going to the + side of the battery. Those items all have separate grounds, but they only have 1 power supply connection. Check the terminals on the battery and see if one has some frayed wire ends sticking out of it. If you find that, you find where the wire goes.

Easiest way to test it is to disconnect the radio's harness and connect that wire you found to the - terminal on the battery. Then check the other items that aren't working. If they work, hook the radio back up and go. My guess is they won't so move the wire to the + terminal on the battery and test the other items again. That should do it, connect the radio back up and you're done.

Safest way to check it is to connect a DMM or continuity tester to that wire then probe both sides of the fuse terminals in the fuse block. If this test shows the wire is connected to the fuse block, it goes to the + side of the battery. If no continuity, then its either a ground or completely unrelated to your problems.

Re: Electronic Oops.

The problem isnt so much the radio is not working its the entire circuit that its on isn't working...domelights, horn, power mirror, locks AND the radio just stopped working one day

Re: Electronic Oops.

Actually, those are spread across several different circuits. The horn and dome lights are on 1 circuit and the radio, power locks, and power mirrors are all on their own separate circuits. That's why I said the wire you found is most likely a +12V power wire that runs to the fuse block, not a ground.

Re: Electronic Oops.

I don't know about yours, but the ACC circuit in both my cars has the dome light, cigarette lighter, hatch release, door locks, under hood light and horn all on the same fuse. The most common culprit for blowing this fuse is the cigarette lighter, I've also had the under hood light blow the fuse.

Re: Electronic Oops.

ahh yeah this wire leads specifically to the engine bay, going thru the pass. side. But now I think I may know what the problem is. I was either checking the wrong fuse. and/or my battery was just too low of charge, It went out on me I had a generator sitting on it for a good 2 hours got it up to the mid-charge line, unplugged it and it went right into the warning threshold, now she wont even ATTEMPT to turn over, its like a bad nightmare lol

Yup same deal with mine, cept I have power mirrors added ^_^. But I think the problem originated from a bad battery not holding a charge and just killing itself with time
